Job description

The Centre for Social Development in Africa (CSDA) was established in 2004 and is dedicated to basic, applied and strategic research in social development and developmental welfare. We aim to positively influence development issues in the Southern African region by contributing to debates on social policy, improvements in service delivery and the expansion of knowledge through cutting-edge research.  
 
Job Description: 

The incumbent will be responsible for conducting research in the social development field in Africa with specific expertise in social policy and social welfare research. In particular they will be required to:
 
  • Initiate and lead research projects in the area of social policy and social welfare 
  • Publish in academic fora
  • Supervise postgraduate students
  • Write proposals for grant funded research projects
  • Manage research projects
  • Report to donors
  • Liaise with external partners and disseminate research 
  • Assistance with staff management 
 
Responsibilities:  
 
  • Conduct research in the social development field in Africa
  • Initiate and lead research projects
  • Academic publishing
  • Supervision of postgraduate students
  • Capacity building of younger staff members
  • Proposal writing for grant funded research projects
  • Management of research projects
  • Reporting to donors
  • Liaison with external partners and dissemination of research 

Minimum requirements

  • Relevant doctoral degree
  • 5 years’ experience in research management
  • Experience in supervision of postgraduate students
  • Good publication record 
 
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

  • Takes initiative
  • Team player 
 
 Recommendations: 

  • Experience with software data management and analysis packages such as Atlas ti/ SPSS/ STATA or similar
  • Experience managing grant funds in a research context
  • Research niche in the area of social policy/social welfare 
  • Proposal writing for grant funding experience
  • Awareness of mixed methodologies
