The University of Johannesburg invites suitably qualified individuals to apply for the position of Senior Lecturer.
 
The School of Economics is one of six schools within the College of Business & Economics (CBE). The core activity of the School of Economics is to train economists in various fields of economics (financial engineering, financial economics, industrial policy, development economics, local economic development, econometrics, competition & regulation economics, environmental economics, and trade economics).
 
The applicants to this post are expected to support our economics  programmes by performing full academic duties that include teaching, postgraduate supervision, and research.
 
Responsibilities:
 
The incumbent will be expected to:
 
  • Have strong knowledge of the fields of local economic development, cultural economics and econometrics.
  • Have strong knowledge of the fields of behavioural economics, sentiment analysis and social economic clusters.
  • Have strong knowledge of the fields of research development and project management in the field of local, sectoral and cultural economic areas.  
  • Have strong knowledge of teaching and learning innovations especially related to Artificial intelligence in a teaching and learning environment.
  • Be able to lecture and supervise Master/PhD students, especially in the field of behaviour economics, local economic development and cultural economics..
  • Be able to conduct and publish high-quality research.

Minimum requirements

For appointment at Senior Lecturer level:
  • A minimum requirement of a relevant PhD degree (NQF 10 level) with strong qualitative and quantitative background.
  • Appropriate teaching and practical experience, proven research ability.
  • The ability to publish research findings in high-ranked accredited/peer-reviewed journals.
  • The ability to implement teaching and learning innovations and assist with curriculum development. The candidate must be willing to teach in other areas of economics when required.
  • Have experience in working in projects and contracts related to local economic development and cultural economic research.
  • Have experience in departmental and faculty committees in areas of teaching and learning, innovation through technology.
  • Proven track record in program management, curriculum development and module coordination.
  • Proven media experience in a diverse range of topics spanning across television, radio and social media.
  • An excellent record of relevant academic publications.
  • Experience in supervising postgraduate students, especially at Master and PhD levels.
  • Experience attending and presenting at local and international conferences.
  • Have proven fieldwork experience.
  • Proven ability to think critically, analytically, and laterally across disciplines and sectors (transdisciplinary).
  • Fluent in written and oral English communication.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues.

  • Minimum of 5 years teaching experience.
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office packages.
  • Working knowledge of software packages in the fields of econometrics.
  • Working knowledge of AI related software for teaching and research.
  • The ability to publish papers in respected journals
  • Have strong networking abilities.
  • Have strong leadership skills as can be seen through project and module management.
  • The ability to manage research projects. The ability to supervise graduate students.
  • Research management skills.
  • Overall management skills.
 
Recommendations:
 
  • A strong background in teaching and learning practices, teaching and learning innovations and program management.
  • The ability to publish in highly ranked accredited/ peer reviewed journals.
  • An NRF rating (or equivalent), or the capability of obtaining one within three to five years.
  • Experience in online teaching and learning methodologies.
