The Faculty of Engineering & Built Environments (FEBE) prides itself in its vibrant, dynamic and diverse engineering community of scholars who are passionate about enhancing the learning experience of students, enhancing the research profile of the faculty, and enhancing the academic, social and economic impact and of the Faculty’s teaching and research programmes.

 

The Department of Construction Management & Quantity Surveying is one of several FEBE departments and one of the faculty's high-performing departments. The Department offers accredited Bachelor of Science Construction (BSc Construction) and BSc (Hons) programmes.
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Pursue an active best practice-informed scholarship of teaching and learning in quantity surveying and construction management areas (undergraduate and postgraduate).
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Design, develop and implement new programmes and changes in existing programmes.
  • Compile Construction Management & Quantity Surveying studies accreditation documentation in consultation with the Academic Departmental Head.
  • Conduct sustainable research of national and international significance.
  • Develop and maintain links with other tertiary institutions, professional bodies, student alumni and industry stakeholders.
  • Develop research grant proposals and secure research funding.
  • Participate in departmental academic administrative tasks.
  • Serve and actively participate on university and faculty committees.
  • Represent the department on various platforms and use one’s knowledge and experience to strengthen the profile and brand of the department, faculty, and the university.

Minimum requirements

  • PhD on NQF Level 10 in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Engineering Management or any related built environment degree underpinned by an undergraduate degree in Quantity Surveying.
  • Minimum of 5 years working experience in the Construction Industry
  • Professional registration with the South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession (PrQS).
  • Student supervision at Honours or master’s level.
  • Record of publication/s in peer-reviewed, nationally, and internationally accredited conference proceedings or scientific journals.
  • At least previous lecturing/teaching experience at a tertiary institution, either part-time or part-time.
 
Recommendations:
 
  • Professional registration with SACQSP.
  • Research specialisation that articulates well with the existing interest of the department.
  • Evidence of research outputs and proven track record of postgraduate supervision at Honours level or higher.

  • Some experience in higher education would be an added advantage.
 
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:
 
  • Good communication skills (written and verbal with a high level of proficiency in English.
  • Good oral communication in at least one other language.
  • Good planning and organisational skills.
  • Computer literacy, including MS Office (MS Word and Excel).
