Job description

The Department of Geography, Environmental Management & Energy Studies is in the Faculty of Science and has 18 academic and 2 support staff members. We have nearly 500 undergraduate and 150 postgraduate students.
 
Description:
 
The Department of Geography, Environmental Management and Energy Studies seek to appoint an Energy Studies specialist with expertise in a variety of sub-fields of Energy Studies such as, but not exclusively, International, Geographical and Political Aspects of Energy and Energy Policy Formulation. A thorough knowledge of Energy Economics is an advantage.
 
Responsibilities:
 
As a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in the Department, the successful candidate shall be required to:
  • Assume responsibility for teaching modules for the Energy Studies Honours programme in the Department.
  • Annually publish peer-reviewed papers in accredited academic journals and deliver papers at national and international conferences, commensurate with the level of appointment.
  • Actively supervise BSc Honours and Masters students (and Doctoral students in the Senior Lecturer position) in Energy Studies and related sub-disciplines.
  • Obtain research funding from external funding bodies.
  • Perform administrative and ad hoc duties as the needs require.

Minimum requirements

  • Applicants must already hold or currently be conducting a Doctoral degree in a qualification relevant to Energy Studies.
  • Provide certified copies of completed masters/doctoral degree certificate/s or evaluated SAQA equivalents for foreign qualifications.
  • Have sound proficiency in the various study fields falling within Energy Studies.
  • Have an understanding and knowledge background in several of the subfields of Energy Studies such as International, Geographical and Political Aspects of Energy, Energy Policy Formulation, Energy Technology, Energy Modelling and/or Energy Economics.
  • Have a record of publishing academic papers in accredited scientific journals commensurate with the level of appointment.
  • Have a national and/or international intellectual network.
  • Have a track record or willingness to apply for external research funding.
 
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:
 
  • Proven skill in Energy Studies and related sub-disciplines.
  • Ability to apply all the relevant skills in addressing critical issues in Energy Studies.
  • Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to supervise student research projects
 
Recommendations:
 
  • Teaching or tutoring experience at a tertiary level.
  • Participation in joint research projects and supervision of postgraduate students.
  • An NRF rating would advance the applicant’s chances of being successful. If the applicant has no NRF rating, he/she should be in the position to apply for a rating within 3-5 years of being appointed.
