Job Description:
 
The Centre for Academic Staff Development is located within the Division for Teaching Excellence (DTE). It provides theoretically informed, research-based, high-quality guidance and support in teaching and learning for tutors, academic staff and heads of department.
 
Current work encompasses the induction of academic staff, both newly appointed lecturers and Heads of Departments; student and peer evaluation of teaching; and the broad goal of promoting excellence in teaching and learning in the UJ through the development of knowledge-based curricula and innovative pedagogies, within a framework of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
 
Responsibilities:
 
As a Coordinator in the Centre for Academic Staff Development (CASD). The incumbent will have to provide theoretically informed, research-based, high-quality development opportunities for senior tutors, tutors, academic staff and academic heads of department. The broad goal of informing this position is to promote excellence in teaching and learning in the UJ.
  • Conceptualise and implement development opportunities for academic staff, senior tutors and tutor
  • Conduct training for mentors and tutors
  • Supervision of tutors on all campuses
  • Consultation with academic staff and senior tutors regarding the tutor system on all campuses.
  • General administrative functions. 
  •  Any other duties as required by the Head of CASD

Minimum requirements

  • Post-graduate (higher diploma and or honors degree), in Education, Staff Development or Educational Psychology, or a cognate field
  • At least 3 years of experience working in Higher Education and/or 1 year working in academic staff development
  • A working knowledge of the South African Higher Education environment
  • Excellent written, oral and electronic communication skills, especially in English
  • Commitment to further studies, preferably in higher education

Recommendations:
 
  • A masters degree in a relevant field.
  • Knowledge of the field of academic development and mentoring in education.
  • Experience of facilitating workshops in teaching and learning in higher education for academic staff
  • Understanding of theories relating to teaching and learning in higher education and its application in the South African higher education
