Job Specification...

The University of Johannesburg invites applications fot the position of Professor/ Associate Professor/ Senior Lecturer (Senior Researcher), at a market-related remuneration package.  This is a full-time academic research position.  Generous research funding and support is available.

This senior position falls under the DST/NRF South African Research Chair in Industrial Development (SARChi), led by Prof Fiona Tregenna.  This is a prestigious research centre, linked to the School of Economics and falling under the College of Business and Economics, funded by South Africa's Department of Science and Technology through the National Research Foundation.  Our activities include free-standing and collaborative research projects; hosting graduate students, postdocs and visiting researchers; policy engagement, and holding research events.  The University of Johannesburg is a leading centre of research in industrial development and related topics, with a number of researchers in research centres and in the College of Business and Economics, making for a dynamic environment with multiple possibilities for fruitful collaboration.

While this cente falls within the field of economics, applicants with a strong background in related disciplines (such as development studies) and with relevant field specialisations and skills may also be considered.  We welcome applicants with research specialisations in fields such as development economics, political economy, trade, innovation, economics of technology or industrial organisation.  Expertise related to the field of industrial development (for example on topics such as but not limited to: industrial policy, structural change, technology, innovation, industrialisation, financialisation, industry and climate change, etc.) would be a strong advantage.

The incumbent will be expected to:

  • Undertake research and publish extensively, especially in high-impact journals.
  • Be involved in initiating and managing research projects.
  • Supervise postgraduate students, and possibly supervise or collaborate with postdoctoral fellows.
  • Assist in overall management and contribute to the various activities of the Research Chair.
  • Initiate, develop and/or be involved in research networks, collaborations, institutional partnerships, grant applications, and the organisation of research events.

There is no lecturing responsibilities associated with this position.

Minimum Requirements...

For appointment at Professor Level:

  • A Doctoral qualification (preferably in economics; applicants with a doctorate in a cognate discipline and with relevant expertise will also be considered).
  • Relevant specialisation.
  • International stature in field of expertise.
  • A sustained and extensive record of excellence in relevant high-impact academic publications.
  • An extensive and successful track record in supervising postgraduate students.

For appointment at Associate Professor Level:

  • A Doctoral qualification (preferably in economics; applicants with a doctorate in a cognate discipline and with relevant expertise will also be considered).
  • Relevant specialisation.
  • An excellent record of relevant academic publications.
  • Experience in supervising postgraduate students.

For appointment at Senior Lecturer Level:

  • A Doctoral qualification (preferably in economics; applicants with a doctorate in a cognate discipline and with relevant expertise will also be considered).
  • Relevant specialisation.
  • Some relevant academic publications.

Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

  • The ability to publish in high-impact journals.
  • The ability to supervise graduate students.
  • Research management skills.
  • Excellent planning, organisational and management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues.

Recommendations:

  • Expertise in or linked to the field of industrial development.
  • Experience in supervising postgraduate students will be a recommendation for appointment at Senior Lecturer level (this is a requirement for appointment at Associate Professor and Professor level).
  • Experience in initiating, being awarded an/or managing large research projects.
  • An NRF rating (or equivalent), or the capability of obtaining one within three to five years.
  • Evidence of sourcing external research funding.
