Job description

The Faculty of Engineering & Built Environment prides itself in its vibrant, dynamic and diverse engineering community of scholars who are assionate about enhancing the learning experience of students, enhancing the research profile of the Faculty and enhancing the academic, social and economic impact of the Faculty’s teaching and research programmes.
 
The Department of Mechanical Engineering Science offers the ECSA accredited Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (BEng) programme, and the Master’s and PhD in Engineering postgraduate programmes. The candidate will be expected to teach, perform research, supervise students and participate in services required by the Department.
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Lecturing, coordinating, assessing and tutoring undergraduate (Departmental/service) modules. Supervision of Honours, Masters, and Doctoral students. Development of Short Learning Programmes.
  • Research and publish in any field that articulates well with the existing research interests of the department. The expected Research Output Units should be in alignment with the deliverables attached to the Job Title.
  • Contributing to departmental outreach and community engagement programmes. This includes but not limited to working with Industries, and Voluntary Associations aligned with the Department’s activities in teaching and learning, as well as in research initiatives.
  • Perform administrative duties as determined by Head of Department e.g. Marketing departmental programmes, preparation for programme quality review, prepare teaching files required for accreditation purposes, participate in departmental, faculty, and university committees.
  • Keep abreast with new developments in the field and effectively apply learnings in the department.
  • Assist the department in raising research funding (internal and external). Write proposals for research funding, contribute to team grant submissions, maintain and secure funding, identify and undertake consultancy projects.

Minimum requirements

Minimum requirements for Professor:
  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering (preferred, due to ECSA requirement) or a closely related (NQF 10 or equivalent);
  • A minimum of ten years teaching experience at a tertiary institution
  • Evidence of strong research outputs as demonstrated by publications in international academic journals internationals
  • Evidence of Postgraduate supervision (Masters and PhD).
  • Evidence of postdoctoral research fellows management
  • Evidence of raising funding for research and community engagement activities
  • Rated or eligible for NRF rating (C or higher) within the first 12 months of joining the department
  • Registered or eligible for ECSA Pr Eng registration within the first 12 months of joining the department 
 
Recommendations:
 
  • A minimum of five years industrial experience.
  • Strong publications record, and the ability to seek significant funding.
  • Knowledge of university, and faculty policies, rules, and regulations
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal skills
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with faculty staff, students, and community members as well as organizational leaders.
  • Collegial and emotionally intelligent
  • Innovative, proactive and creative
  • Ability to work in a pressurised environment and independently
  • High level of integrity and ethical foundation
 
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:
 
  • Relevant evidence of discipline advancement and / or community engagement projects.
  • Fluent in English, teaching demonstration would be required.
  • Evidence of professional development.

  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering (preferred, due to ECSA requirement) or a closely related (NQF 10 or equivalent);
  • A minimum of seven years teaching experience at a tertiary institution
  • Evidence of strong research outputs as demonstrated by publications in international academic journals internationals
  • Evidence of Postgraduate supervision (Masters and PhD).
  • Evidence of raising funding for research and community engagement activities
  • Rated or eligible for NRF rating within the first 12 months of joining the department
  • Registered or eligible for ECSA Pr Eng registration within the first 12 months of joining the department
