Job description
“Please note that the University is obligated, in terms of recent amendments to the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act 2021 (Act 13 of 2021), to assess all prospective employees (including applicants) against the National Register for Sex Offenders (NRSO). The outcome of such an assessment may have an impact upon possible employment with the University.
- Teach and assess in relevant postgraduate modules, particularly within the joint professional BArch (Hons)/MArch (Prof) programme.
- Supervise student work within the Unit System and/or associated research clusters.
- Contribute to the GSA’s creative and research outputs, including exhibitions, symposia, and publications.
- Participate in the development of innovative and contextually grounded research projects aligned with the GSA’s pedagogical goals.
- Engage actively in the GSA’s public programmes, national and international partnerships, and strategic initiatives.
- Participate in the nGAP mentoring programme, research development plans, and training as required by the SSAUF framework.
Minimum requirements
- A relevant Master’s degree in Architecture or equivalent (NQF level 9) with a minimum of 70% academic performance, as per nGAP requirements.
- Demonstrated academic potential and commitment to pursuing a doctoral degree within the first three years of appointment.
- A candidate with a PhD in the required field must have obtained a minimum of 70% in their Masters.
- Strong design and research portfolio that includes work aligned with transformative, socially engaged, or experimental architectural practice.
- Familiarity with emerging debates in architectural pedagogy, decolonisation, and/or 4IR approaches.
- A high level of motivation, responsibility, and capacity for independent research.
- Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.
- Commitment to working in a diverse and multicultural academic community.
- Willingness and ability to contribute to the broader institutional and societal goals of transformation in South Africa and beyond.
- At least one year of teaching or tutoring experience in architectural education, preferably in the Unit System
- Experience in unit system/design studio coordination or leadership.
- Registration or eligibility for registration with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP) or equivalent.
- Familiarity with the GSA’s pedagogical model and commitment to its ethos.
- Digital proficiency, including comfort with blended and online learning platforms.
- Evidence of creative or peer-reviewed outputs, including exhibitions or publications
- Structured mentoring and support;
- Reduced teaching load in early years;
- Research development grants.
- Participation in national academic development programmes;
- Permanent employment from the date of appointment, with the expectation of university-funded continuation beyond the six-year DHET support period.
