Job description

The Department of Sociology is one of the leading sociology departments in the country. It is ranked 1st in South Africa and 187th in the world according to the 2019-2020 URAP (University Ranking by Academic Performance) Field Rankings, and is ranked 1st in South Africa according to the prestigious Shanghai Ranking: Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2020. Our research covers a range of diverse areas inclusive of, but not limited to; the sociology of class, race and gender; the sociology of work; sexualities; social identities; social movements and collective action; citizenship, biopolitics, and social protection; urban studies, migration studies; clinical sociology and conflict studies.
The Department seeks to appoint a Professor of Sociology/Industrial Sociology. The incumbent should be a high caliber scholar and innovative thinker who will take on a strong leadership role and continue to build the Department’s profile and standing nationally and internationally. The incumbent will teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervise, produce research, and contribute to academic citizenship.

Responsibilities: 
 
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute meaningfully to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, postgraduate supervision and administrative duties in the Department.
 
In particular, the incumbent will be expected to:
•       Teach, supervise and promote a culture of innovative learning at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
•       Contribute to curriculum development, course coordination and associated administration,
•       Promote quality research and research outputs;
•       Attend departmental and faculty meetings; and
•       Participate in community engagement initiatives in the Department and Faculty.

Minimum requirements

•       A doctoral degree in Sociology/Industrial Sociology or related discipline •
•       Teaching experience commensurate with the level of the post;
•       Evidence of sustained, significant output as an established researcher
•       Ability to provide academic leadership and mentoring;
•       Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative research methods;
•       A solid track record of postgraduate supervision at Masters, Doctoral and Postdoctoral levels.

•       Established track record in international and high-impact journals and publications;
•       Ability to work with and teach SPSS and supervise quantitative research; and
•       Experience of raising and managing grant funds in a research context.
•       NRF rating strongly recommended.
