Job description
This role will be support the Compliance Manager in the development and overseeing of the control systems to prevent or manage violations of legal and regulatory guidelines, policies, and procedures; evaluate the efficiency of controls and improve them continuously; revising policies and procedures, reports periodically to identify hidden risks or non-conformity issues in collaboration with respective stakeholders.
 
The individual will be responsible for supporting the process of designing and implementation of a compliance risk management process that includes the identification, assessment, management, monitoring and reporting of compliance risks that are faced by the relevant business unit.
 
The core responsibilities of this role include but not limited to:
 
·      Support the Manager in the process of implementing compliance management in the University, through assistance in the development of policies and procedures, ensuring that these are monitored and updated regularly having considered legislative and regulatory updates,
·      Assist in the coordination of the University’s Compliance Management Implementation plan,
·      Assist with continuously update the regulatory universe of the University,
·      Assists with the development of Compliance Risk Management Plans (CRMP) that prioritise compliance risks, and monitors progress towards implementation of controls,
·      Secretariat of the University Compliance Champions forum, through the scheduling of meetings, prepare agenda and document minutes,
·      Assist in the preparation of reports and presentations on compliance management to University committees and other key stakeholder committees,
·      Gather and interpret compliance related data from internal and external sources,
·      Assist in the monitoring and review of academic and non-academic areas to assess compliance and provide mitigation recommendations,
·      Keep abreast of key changes to legislation and proposed bills,
·      Assist in the development and implementation of a compliance monitoring process,
·      Working together with Assurance providers, establish non-compliance issues raised by audit and formulate plan to ensure compliance,
·      Assist the relevant units in developing principles for GRC through compliance.
  • Maintaining the input and/or data quality of the compliance management system, currently BarnOwl.








Minimum requirements

  • BCom degree in Law/Compliance or related qualification (NQF 8)
  • No years of experience required
  • Generic knowledge of all aspects of compliance
  • Knowledge of Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI ), King IV Code of Corporate Governance, Generally Accepted Compliance Practice, and familiarity with general principles of good governance
 
Preferred Requirements
  • Knowledge of the South African Legislative System
  • Preferably have a Professional affiliation, e.g., Registered with Compliance Institute Southern Africa (CISA), or Registered with Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) or Admitted attorney, or advocate in South Africa
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Ms Word, Excel and PowerPoint
 
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:
·      Generic understanding of governance, risk, compliance, and assurance concepts,
·      Advantageous to have performed and worked with risk-based compliance monitoring or risk-based auditing,
·      Self-starter and passionate about his/her work and has a ‘can do’ mentality,
·      Negotiation and persuasion skills preferable,
·      Ability to maintain effective relationships with a wide constituent group of University employees, students, other universities, public risk officials, and general public,
·      Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative fashion and to successfully manage conflicts leading to positive outcomes with the resources available,
·      Ability to work independently towards the accomplishment of agreed upon goals for the position,
·      Ability to accumulate a large amount of data, organise the data in a user-friendly fashion, provide ready access to this data for those who need access to it, and ensure the data is reviewed / updated as required,
·      Good facilitation ability, strong listening, organisational and communication skills,
·      Ability to exercise judgement in assessing risk,

Criteria for selection of candidates:
  • Graduates between the ages of 18 and 35.
  • Not studying full time (preferably attending after hours classes).
  • Must be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
  • Have NOT participated in any Learnership/Internship programme before.
  • Be willing to commit to the Internship for the period of 6 months.
