Job description

The Department of Biotechnology and Food Technology has been established in the Faculty of Science at the Doornfontein Campus of the University of Johannesburg with effect from January 2014. It is focused on training Biotechnologists and Food Technologists for a wide range of Industries as well as research in the related fields.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate

  • Must be capable to lecture Microbiology, Industrial Biotechnology or Industrial Microbiology.
  • Must demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and productive research and play a leading role in teaching innovation.
  • Must be able to develop course material for Biotechnology modules required in the Department of Biotechnology and Food Technology
  • Must be actively involved in core activities of the department such as academic administration, research, short-course development, marketing, and community projects.
  • Be familiar with South African Biotechnology and Food Industry and be able to coordinate Work Integrated Learning.

Minimum requirements

  • A completed PhD in Microbiology or Biochemistry or Molecular Biology or Genetics or Biotechnology.
  • Familiarity with SA Biotechnology and Food Industry.
  • Proven record of engagement with the scholarship of teaching, e.g. an abridged teaching evaluation or portfolio.
  • At least 3 years teaching experience in Microbiology, Biochemistry or Biotechnology at a Higher Education Institution.
  • A track record of post-graduate research supervision and publication in the relevant field.
  • Strong commitment to good teaching and research.
  • Sound communication skills in English.
  • A good track record of attracting research grants/funding.

Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

  • Excellent written and verbal English communications skills.
  • Excellent teaching skills and good interpersonal skills as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues.
  • Good planning and organizational skills.
  • Enthusiasm and passion for Biotechnology, Research and Community Engagement.
  • Experience in the integration of ICT in teaching and learning as well as electronic assessment techniques e.g. Blackboard.

Recommendations:

  • Proven record of engagement with the scholarship of teaching, e.g. teaching evaluation or relevant portfolio.
  • Innovative teaching techniques incorporating technology.
  • NRF Rating would be an added advantage.
  • Ability to develop new undergraduate and postgraduate modules.
  • Able to teach large groups (± 150).
