Introduction

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is a vibrant and cosmopolitan university, anchored in Africa and driven by a powerful strategy focused on attaining global excellence and stature (GES). With an emphasis on independent thinking, sustainable development and strategic partnerships, UJ is an international university of choice. The University is guided by the Vice-Chancellor’s vision of “Positioning UJ in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) in the context of the changing social, political and economic fortunes of Africa”.

Job description

The future of work, health and well-being, and the sustainability of life in general, in the context of the climate crisis and global inequity, will be shaped by automation with artificial intelligence. Indeed, artificial intelligence has reached the point at which the self-learning, computational speed and capacity for the analysis of mega-data has rivalled and, can in some instances, outperform humans in a range of professions. Humanity is at a crossroad, where the future depends on current choices, informed by critical thought and knowledge. By nature, knowledge is complex, multi-dimensional, and shaped by past and present experiences and world views.

In 2019, UJ created the Institute for the Future of Knowledge (IFK) as a cross-disciplinary ecosystem devoted to understanding the relationship between what we know and what will happen in the future. The Institute has, as its core, the directive to reimagine and direct a research programme about the future of knowledge. Looking to the future, the IFK should create new bodies of knowledge with innovative and forward-thinking connections.

Responsibilities and expectations:

The Director will be responsible for strategic leadership, inter alia directing and shaping the future of the IFK. To this end, the Director should be of the highest scholarly calibre, with a research, ideation and innovation portfolio addressing issues of global significance. The Director must take a consultative approach with relevant university executives (deans, vice-deans, and others) towards a strategy that is developed with relevant entities of the organisation. The Director should have a sound knowledge of 'Future Studies', and the ability to keep up with cutting-edge knowledge as this field evolves. The Director should have a strong international network of collaborators, the ability to expand and foster new partnerships and work towards the financial self-sustainability of the Institute.

In addition to shaping and actively driving the future of the IFK, the Director will also be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Institute. The Director should have experience in managing and overseeing people and projects, a sound knowledge of financial sustainability, networking and fundraising (in conjunction with the University's Development Office). The Director should have a track-record of successfully securing both national and international funding in thematic areas of global importance.

Minimum requirements

  • A Doctoral qualification, with a substantive research portfolio or significant professional experience;
  • Professional networking and fundraising experience, and an ability to work productively with partners;
  • Ability to conduct and direct research, and communicate ideas to a range of stakeholders;
  • A track record of leadership, governance, organisational management, administration, and financial management.

Recommendations:

  • NRF rated or meets the criteria for NRF rating in the South African system (incumbent will be required to apply; see https://www.nrf.ac.za/rating).
