Job description
The Council of the University of Johannesburg has declared the University as a mandatory vaccination site as per the applicable policy ((https://www.uj.ac.za/covid-19/). All applications and offers of employment is dependent upon compliance with the said policy.
- Assist in the legal and administrative functioning of final year LLB students in one of the Clinics, reporting to the Clinic Principal Attorney and the Director: UJ Law Clinic.
- You will clinically assess students and train them in a live-client environment.
- Dealing with real cases preparing court cases and doing court appearances on behalf of clients are part of your day-to-day activities.
- You will be expected to keep up with legal developments and to do research on current legal issues and developments.
- From time-to-time specific tasks or projects will be allocated to you by the Clinic Principal Attorney or the Director: UJ Law Clinic.
- Control and approve expenditure within the Department up to a specified level.
- Supervise and organize the Secretary and Assistants at the Clinic everyday/week.
Minimum requirements
- LLB degree.
- Must be already admitted as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa.
- Personal experience and personal appearances in Magistrate's Court Civil Litigation is essential.
- Must be admitted as and able to practice as an Attorney.
- Must be able to practice in English.
- Excellent computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, and e-mail) and good typing skills.
- Must be able to supervise staff and students and train and assess students.
- Experience in clinical legal training and assessment of students at a University Law Clinic.
- Computer literacy in MS Office (Word and Excel), as well as email and internet.
- Good legal knowledge and skills.
- A passion for the law and protection of the rights of vulnerable members of society.
- Good negotiation skills.
- The ability to function independently.
- Good time-management skills.
- Good interpersonal relations and a client-service orientation.
- The ability to perform under pressure
- Experience in pro bono representation of clients in Court.
