Job description

The University of Johannesburg Postgraduate School encompasses four divisions/units: Postgraduate Fund Management, Statistical Consultation (Statkon), Research Capacity Development, and Policies, Benchmarking Monitoring and Research. The mandate of the PGS is to provide strategic support to postgraduates and postdoctoral research fellowships, postgraduate funding, development of research capacity and the improvement of staff qualifications. The Director of RCD reports to the Senior Director of the Postgraduate School and their primary role is to lead and oversee the provision of the development of research capacity of postgraduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and emerging supervisors, as well as the improvement of staff qualifications. In addition to specialisation in their core academic discipline, we envisage graduates who should have the competitive edge of 4IR.

The purpose of this position is to provide strategic direction and manage the conceptualisation, design and delivery of the researcher development and supervision development programmes offered from the Postgraduate School, with the aim of improving postgraduate retention, throughput, and student satisfaction, as well as increasing research output and improving research quality.

Responsibilities: 
 
The Director of RCD is expected to:
 
  • Provide strategic direction regarding researcher development and supervision capacity development to the university
  • Conceptualise innovative research-informed researcher and supervision development programmes and initiatives
  • Consult with deans, vice-deans and HoDs on strategies for improving postgraduate retention, time to completion, and research output, as well as on managing bottlenecks in PG programmes
  • Ensure that the university including the deans and vice-deans are kept fully informed on developments and issues relating to researcher development and supervisor training in the university
  • Lead specific projects/initiatives as directed by the Senior Director of the PG School, or as demanded by having secured external funding
  • Initiate and build relationships with both international and local experts in the researcher development and research supervision
  • Provide thought leadership on issues relating to postgraduate supervision.
  • Strategic planning and consulting on issues relating to postgraduate supervision
  • Have oversight of the seven Senate-approved 20-credit blended short learning programmes (SLPs) on supervision
  • Lead and manage Postgraduate Diploma in Research Supervision
  • Conceptualise and manage workshops for supervisors on aspects of research supervision
  • Conceptualise and lead the interfaculty Postgraduate Supervision Forum, held each semester
  • Have oversight of the Supervision Enrichment Winter School held annually
  • Have oversight and manage the development of digital resources to complement the other supervision development initiatives
  • Ensure governance with regard to researcher and supervision development resources, including grant allocations/external funding, e.g. UCDG
  • Ensure governance regarding the use of university and grant resources
  • Take overall responsibility for reporting on activities to executive management, faculties and to external funders
  • Deputise for the Senior Director of the PG School in her/his absence, if required
  • Serve as part of the PG School Management Team
  • Represent the PG School and the university on a range of internal and external committees and working groups
  • Engage in research related to researcher development and postgraduate supervision
  • Lead the development and review of the Postgraduate School’s researcher development framework
  • Ensure effective administration of the DHET University Capacity Development Grant

Minimum requirements

  •  A doctorate qualification or equivalent
  • A minimum of 15 years-experience in academic/staff development in a tertiary education environment
  • A minimum of 5 years-experience in management level experience in a tertiary education environment
  • Ten-year proven track record of leading academic projects/initiatives in a tertiary education environment
  • Experience in implementation of learning programmes/courses using blended learning or digital technologies
  • Knowledge of project management in the context of tertiary education
  • Involvement in programmes/courses/interventions to develop research literacies in a postgraduate studies context
  • Knowledge about postgraduate studies, research supervision, research design & methodology, adult learning, and digital technologies
