Job description

The Department of Graphic Design, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture is recruiting a communication design lecturer to teach communication design and communication design theory to under- and postgraduate students

Responsibilities:

•Prepare and present formal lectures and provide consultation opportunities in face-to-face and online modes in practical and theoretical modules in the under- and postgraduate Communication Design programmes
•Develop and apply innovative teaching strategies and methods
•Conduct student assessments and moderation according to the rules and regulations of the University
•Undertake academic year and/ or module coordination
•Work independently and collaboratively in developing academic programmes
•Participate in discipline or industry conferences, workshops and seminars
•Engage in discipline-related accredited textual research and/or equivalent accredited creative output of an excellent standard
•Provide academic supervision up to at least Masters level
•Contribute to departmental outreach and community engagement programmes
•Develop constructive interactions with industry or other constituencies outside of UJ which are to the benefit of scholarship at the University
•Participate in the activities of the Graphic Design Department, represent the Department on one or more Faculty committee and perform administrative duties as required
•Contribute broadly to student satisfaction, graduate output and progression to postgraduate study

Minimum requirements

  • A Doctoral qualification in a relevant discipline such as Design, Communication Design, Graphic Design, Information Design, MultiMedia, Advertising or Illustration
  • Proven experience in teaching a variety of communication design projects, such as branding, brand activation, packaging, web design, wayfinding, illustration and photography at both under- and postgraduate level
  • Proven experience in teaching communication design theory and research methodology
  • Proven experience in postgraduate supervision
  • Experience in module and/or academic year/ module administration
  • Publication portfolio of at least three conference papers and two journal articles OR a portfolio of accredited creative outputs comprising at least five outputs of acceptable size/volume and scope OR an acceptable combination of accredited textual research and creative outputs

Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

  • Good working knowledge of Blackboard™, MS Word™ and Excel™
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud™ applications (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and After Effects)
  • Good administrative skills
  • Excellent English communication skills
  • Self-motivated, inspirational and enthusiastic lecturer.
  • Excellent time management and good organising, planning, and writing skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills that acknowledge different cultural perspectives
  • The ability to work in a team context

Recommendations:

•At least three years of professional industry experience
•Strong industrial interactions and involvement with communities, industry or governmental organisations
•Proven evidence of successful Doctoral supervision
•In addition to excellent English communication skills, proficiency in at least one African language
•NRF rating
