Job description

UJ Arts & Culture, a division of the Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture (FADA), produces and presents world-class student and professional arts programmes aligned to the UJ vision of an international university, anchored in Africa, dynamically shaping the future. A robust range of arts platforms are offered on all four UJ campuses for students, staff, alumni, and the general public, to experience and engage with emerging and established Pan-African and international artists drawn from the full spectrum of the arts.

Job Specification:

UJ Arts & Culture seeks to appoint an Arts & Culture Officer to join the division’s production team. Critical to the smooth running of operations, the Arts & Culture Officer is responsible for day-to-day technical running of the division’s operations, programmes, projects and those of external clients leasing facilities. Additionally, the Officer is responsible for access and risk management, theatre facilities and equipment management and also supports administrative processes, coordinate selected Arts Academy programmes and is responsible theatre Health and Safety compliance.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee technical quality control and service delivery for internal programmes and projects and external clients;
  • Theatre asset and equipment control and maintenance;
  • Serving as liaison between creative and technical teams;
  • Processing event risk applications for all division activities;
  • Oversee repairs and maintenance for theatres (greenroom, dressing rooms, wardrobe and storage), studios and the conference room;
  • Oversee repairs and maintenance procurement processes;
  • Oversee procurement processes for new theatre equipment;
  • Maintaining the division’s global schedule of student and division activities across all facilities (three theatres, four studios and a conference room);
  • Administering performing licenses/rights;
  • Oversee theatres compliance with Health and Safety and align operations with best practice;
  • Line-management of permanent and temporary production staff;
  • Coordinate and process artists and division partner contracts;
  • Oversee contracting, training, scheduling and managing technical crews; and
  • Coordinating selected Arts Academy programmes.

Minimum requirements

  • Degree in relevant field/s
  • Track record of relevant experience
  • Extensive technical theatre knowledge
  • People management experience
  • Code 08 drivers license

Recommendations:

The ideal candidate will have proven technical theatre management experience and knowledge and thrive in a fast paced environment. People management experience as well as project management and coordination skills and experience will be advantages.
