Job description

The Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Johannesburg, wishes to appoint a Laboratory Technician qualified and registered as a Medical Laboratory Technologist/ Medical Laboratory Scientist, who will contribute actively towards the practical components of the Medical Laboratory Sciences degree; in-line with the vision, mission and goals of the University of Johannesburg.

The successful candidate is expected to manage the Department’s laboratories and assist Lecturers in the facilitation of the practical component for the various Biomedical Sciences modules, in-line with the departmental and Faculty specific objectives.

Responsibilities:

• Facilitate and coordinate all undergraduate practicals within the Biomedical laboratories.
• Liaise with module lecturers in running discipline specific practicals.
• Marking of laboratory assignments and projects.
• Ensure precision and maintenance of specialised laboratory equipment.
• Assist in the identification of non-technical duties such as procurement of laboratory equipment, furnishing and laboratory consumables, stock control and organisation of waste removal.
• Ensure that occupational health and safety risks are followed to minimise risk.
• Manage the technical preparation of the laboratory according to the relevant procedures on a daily basis.

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor of Technology Biomedical Technology (BTech)/ MLS or equivalent
  • HPCSA registration as a Medical Technologist/ MLS (Clinical Pathology)

• Proficiency in English. • Ability to be assertive when required.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of information at all times, as well as maintaining reliability and integrity.
• Ability to work on own, as well as in a team.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent time management skills: the ability to prioritize workload and work under pressure (resilience) without supervision (adaptability).

Recommendations:

• Experience at a Tertiary Education Institution: including preparation of practicals.
• Technical experience with at least 1-2 years’ experience (proven track record).
