Job description

The UJ Academic Development Centre (ADC) strives to provide theoretically based, and practical interventions and developmental opportunities to both Academic staff and students. ADC consists of Access Programmes and Academic Development and Innovation. All student related services are equally but proportionally represented on all four UJ campuses and the ADC staff strive to provide integrated, relevant and up-to-date growth opportunities. ADC: Access offers extended curriculum programmes on behalf of the College of Business and Economics and the Humanities and Engineering and the Built Environment Faculties. A significant focus of the ADC: Access wing is laying a strong knowledge foundation for higher education through the offering of foundational provision modules to extended students.
 
 Responsibilities: 

The incumbent will coordinate, manage, and implement extended curriculum programmes hosted in ADC. The Head: Access takes overall responsibility for the day-to-day running of the Access wing of ADC and as such takes responsibility for the strategic and academic leadership and functioning of integrated Access Programmes (Extended Curriculum Programmes (ECP)) and AD (Academic Development) interventions across 3 UJ campuses
 
In particular, the incumbent will:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the Access programmes housed in ADC
  • Take overall responsibility for the Finances and HR functions in ADC: Access
  • Provide oversight of the academic activities of the ECP’s housed in ADC: Access
  • Work closely with Faculties/College representatives from the level of Vice Dean
  • Lead the ADC: Access wing of ADC
  • Provide advice and guidance to Faculties/College with regards to extended curriculum policy and practice
  • Coordinate and collate UJ ECP planning across the institution
  • Compile the required ECP annual reports as required by the Department of Higher Education and training (DHET)
  • Liaise with the DHET with regards to ECP’s at UJ
  • Report on ECPs at UJ and ensure effective record keeping
  • Contribute to the ECP discussion within the university and at a national level

Minimum requirements

  • A relevant Master’s degree;
  • Sound knowledge of, insight into, and vision related to extended qualification policy, theory and practice;
  • 10 years’ experience working in extended curriculum programmes and academic development
  • 5 years’ management experience;
  • 5 years’ teaching experience in Higher Education
  • Proven resources management skills with excellent communication and conflict management skills;
  • The ability to function under pressure and be proactive;
  • Unquestionable professional integrity, ethics and abilities.
