Job description

The Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences (MIRS) is located within the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS). The MIRS Department is one of 12 academic departments within the FHS. The MIRS Department has 11 lecturers, 1 Clinical Facilitator and a secretary to serve a total of 502 students over 7 programmes. Undergraduate students are employed in accredited clinical training centres for the Work integrated Learning (WIL) portion of the training, which requires close liaison with our partners in co-operative education. The MIRS Department has significantly increased its research profile over the last five years with all full-time academic staff in possession of a minimum of a master’s degree qualification, while five are currently registered for the doctoral degree qualification. The Department has also significantly increased its international and global footprint in line with the UJ strategy.

Responsibilities:  

The successful candidate must:

  • Be able to lecture at the undergraduate level
  • Be able to undertake clinical instruction and assessment
  • Be able to assess learners theoretically and clinically
  • Be prepared to travel to training centres to assess learners
  • Undertake research and publish the results
  • Supervise postgraduate students
  • Must show a commitment to excellence in teaching and innovation within the field
  • Perform academic and administrative duties as required within the Department of MIRS and the Faculty of Health Sciences
  • Community engagement involvement for the betterment of the institution and community.
  • Continuously develop self in the scientific field, career development and leadership qualities. 

Minimum requirements

  • Masters qualification in Radiography. The successful candidate will be expected to register for a doctoral degree soon after commencement of duties.
  • Registration with HPCSA in the Radiography and Clinical Technology Board.  
  • Minimum of 3 years lecturing experience in medical imaging and radiation sciences.
  • Driver’s license (minimum code 08).
  • Experience in medical imaging and radiation sciences undergraduate teaching and learning.
  • Experience in preparing and delivering undergraduate clinical training and assessments.
  • Experience in designing, executing and evaluating assessments clinically and theoretically.
  • Broad Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences disciplinary knowledge, skills and competencies
