Job description

The role of the Manager: Space and Architecture is to; plan and design new building projects (alterations and new minor projects), to manage the activities of the planning office, including all digital information (floorplans, site development plans & space database). The role also includes space planning to manage the allocation and use of all spaces owned by UJ for effective and efficient use, thereby providing Space Data to the Department of Higher Education and Training, and to UJ management and all other interested parties to be used in strategic and operational decision making to support the core business of UJ.
 

Job Specifications: 
 
  •  Manage the planning office and staff productivity to ensure good client service and support the core business of UJ.
  • Manage the effective and efficient use of all spaces owned by UJ according to set policies, procedures, norms and standards from UJ and the Department of Higher Education and Training, as well as proven best practice models.
  • Plan and design internal projects undertaken by UJ and ensure compliance with the applicable National Building Regulations and SANS 10400 standards.
  • Manage and keep up-to-date the site development plans of all the campuses of UJ ensuring compliance to the National Building Regulations and the Local Authority Bylaws and Regulations.
  • Provide source documents (graphical information converted into a digital database) and an up-to-date space database to other computerised management systems (ArchiBus), accounting for all properties, buildings and spaces used by UJ for effective and efficient allocation, use and maintenance thereof.
  • Regularly test the integrity of the source documents and the space database and the interconnectivity thereof to the other computerised management software.
  • Manage and install the CAD (AutoCAD & Revit) and Space Management (ArchiBus) software systems and their respective licences and to ensure that the UJ stays on the cutting edge of technology in these fields.
  • Implement and manage policies, procedures and standards with regards to the planning office, digital information as well as the information received from the external professional consultants.
  • Perform quality assurance on the functions and information of the planning office and external professional consultants working on building projects according to norms as set by UJ.  

Minimum requirements

To qualify, you need to have:

  • A three year Degree or Diploma in Architectural Technology
  • Five (5) years proven working experience within architecture and space planning
  • Certification in AutoCAD Level 2 Advanced or better
  • Professional Membership or Registration: Be registered with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession as a Professional Senior Architectural Technologist
  • A valid driver’s license

  • Previous experience working in a planning / drawing office using AutoCAD
  • CAD management within a planning/ drawing office specifically relating to AutoCAD
  • Preparing council submission drawings for building projects
  • Space Management, space planning and application of space norms
  • Using ArchiBus Space Management Software
