The Department of Communication and Media is part of the School of Communication in the Faculty of Humanities. The Department offers an undergraduate major in Communication and Media, and also offers Honours degrees in journalism, film and television, as well as supervision up to Postdoctoral level. The Department aims to play a critical role in both the University and the wider society by contributing to debates on the role of journalism, film and television in shaping society, as well as producing well-trained graduates that a relevant to these fast-changing cultural industries.
 
The Department seeks to appoint an Associate Professor/ Professor in the Department on a permanent contract. The incumbent should be a high calibre scholar/ practitioner and innovative thinker who will take on a strong leadership role and continue to build the Department’s profile and standing nationally and internationally. The incumbent will teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervise, produce research at a high level, and contribute to academic citizenship.
 
Responsibilities: 
  • Teach theoretical and practical courses across the year groups from undergraduate to postgraduate;
  • Course coordination, assistance with curriculum development and associated administration;
  • Publish in peer reviewed, accredited publications;
  • Recruit and supervise postgraduate students, including post-doctoral fellows;
  • Build and maintain national and international external partners, including the media industry.





Minimum requirements

  • A relevant Doctoral degree;
  • A research track record;
  • Teaching experience commensurate with the level of the post;
  • A solid track record of postgraduate supervision at Masters, Doctoral and Postdoctoral levels;
  • Sound theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of communication and media, and an ability to teach on a wide variety of areas, although particular expertise on journalism studies would be a strong advantage;
  • Knowledge of journalism
 
Recommendations:
  • Experience of raising and managing grant funds in a research context;
  • Experience of staff and budget management.
  • Experience in teaching both theory and applied journalism.
  • Journalism industry experience.
