Job description

The Department of Chemical Sciences is an academic unit within the Faculty of Science. The core functions of the department are teaching, training and research. The department is situated on both the APK Campus in Auckland Park, and the DFC campus in Johannesburg.
The Department is proud to be one of the largest departments at University of Johannesburg and in South Africa. In terms of teaching, the Department offers all the four core disciplines of chemistry, i.e. Analytical, Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry. Our research focusses on a number of aspects including water treatment and purification, natural products and medicinal chemistry, catalysis, computational chemistry, materials science (nano-, supramolecular- and bulk-materials with applications in sensors, energy (solar, fuel cells, and supercapacitors), etc. The Department is also a host to SARCHi chair in nanotechnology and water.

  • Responsibilities:

• Must demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and productive research, and play a leading role in teaching innovation including the use of e-learning tools.
• Be actively involved in core activities of the department such as teaching, research, academic administration, short-course development, marketing, and community projects and science engagement.
• Assume responsibility to teach modules (theory and/or practical) enlisted for the Chemistry undergraduate programme in the Department.
• The incumbent will also be expected to participate in curriculum development and teach modules in postgraduate programmes.
• Annually publish peer-reviewed papers in accredited scientific and/or academic journals, and deliver papers at national and international conferences, commensurate with the level of appointment.
• Actively supervise postgraduate students.
• Obtain research funding from external funding bodies.
• Perform administrative and ad hoc duties as required by the Department

Minimum requirements

• PhD in chemistry or equivalent, with experience in synthetic coordination /organometallic chemistry, catalysis and supramolecular chemistry.
• Must have teaching experience at undergraduate at tertiary level.
• Previous involvement in developing university learning programmes, developing and/or enriching new or existing courses.
• Proven research excellence and sustained, significant research outputs in ISI accredited journals will be beneficial.
• Evidence of community and science engagement and industrial partnership(s) involvement would be beneficial.
• Proven record of engagement with the scholarship of teaching, e.g. an abridged teaching evaluation or portfolio if available.
• Strong commitment to teaching and research.
• Sound communication skills in English.
• A good/successful research fundraising record of accomplishment.
