Job description

The Faculty of Engineering & Built Environments prides itself in its vibrant, dynamic and diverse engineering community of scholars who are passionate about enhancing the learning experience of students, enhancing the research profile of the Faculty and enhancing the academic, social and economic impact of the Faculty’s teaching and research programmes.

The Department of Chemical Engineering Technology (situated on Doornfontein Campus) offers accredited undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. It is seated in the School of Mining, Metallurgy and Chemical Engineering (SOMMCE), and the overarching Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE).

Responsibilities: 

  • Develop a teaching and learning portfolio reflecting:
  • Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) through the:
  • Teaching, reviewing and developing of undergraduate and postgraduate modules;
  • Supervision of final year undergraduate and honours project students;
  • Supervision of postgraduate students at masters/doctoral level (where applicable);
  • Partnership with postdoctoral research fellows (PDRFs);
  • Conduct own research and produce recognised research outputs (accredited ISI-/IBSS-listed journals and patents);
  • Actively participate in one of the existing research groups within the Department and drive research activities as well as raise and manage funds from national and international funding agencies and industry
  • Advance the discipline of Chemical Engineering through industrial work, community engagement and active participation in voluntary associations (e.g. SAIChE, SAIMM) / professional societies (e.g. ECSA);
  • Actively be involved in all Departmental academic and administrative activities/duties (e.g. ECSA accreditation preparations, participation in official meetings and gatherings).
  • Computer literacy in some Chemical Engineering related software packages
  • Drive the Global Excellence and Stature (GES) objectives of the University of Johannesburg

Minimum requirements

Senior Lecturer

  • A PhD qualification in Chemical Engineering
  • Strong academic commitment to teaching and research
  • Ability to perform research, teaching and administration simultaneously.
  • Research in any of the following areas aligned to the strategic goals of the Department and the University: process modelling and automation, mineral processing, water treatment, environmental process engineering, nanotechnology, catalysis and renewable energy.

Lecturer

  • A Masters qualification in Chemical Engineering
  • Strong academic commitment to teaching and research
  • Ability to perform research, teaching and administration simultaneously.
  • Research in any of the following areas aligned to the strategic goals of the Department and the University: process modelling and automation, mineral processing, water treatment, environmental process engineering, nanotechnology, catalysis and renewable energy.

Competencies:

  • Fluent in English, teaching/ lecturing demonstration would be required;
  • Industrial experience;
  • Relevant evidence of discipline advancement and/or community engagement projects;
  • Evidence of professional development;
  • Evidence of relevant research capacity
  • Strong academic character;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability/experience to work with multidisciplinary team(s)
  • Excellence in Teaching and Learning;
  • Excellence in Research and Innovation;
  • Committed to the UJ Values: Regeneration, Imagination, Conversation and Ethical Foundation;

Recommendations:

  • Registration or eligibility for registration as a professional engineer (Pr. Eng. with ECSA) will be a distinct advantage.
  • Formal lecturing experience at University level, including course and curriculum development in core chemical engineering topics namely, thermodynamics, heat transfer, mass transfer, fluid flow, transport phenomenon, reactions, process control, and separation processes.
  • Training and/or having experience in process design will be a distinct advantage.
  • A reasonable period of experience in industry or a research organization (3 years or more) in the stated fields will be an advantage.
  • Chemical Process Modelling and Control
  • Computational Fluid dynamic (CFD)
  • Numerical and Computational Modelling
  • Competency using MATLAB and SIMULINK or other any open source alternatives such as Genius, GNU Octave, Scilab and Sagemath
  • Experience using chemical process simulation tools such as Aspen Plus, Aspen Hysys and/or ChemCad
