Job description

The primary role of the UJELP Tutor is to support the Socio Academic Development of international students in a contact classroom situation and /or in an online learning setting by providing tutorial services for students enrolled in the University of Johannesburg English Language Programme (UJELP). This position requires the tutor to have good communication skills and the ability to adapt his or her facilitation methods to meet the needs of the student, as well as have a desire to see students succeed at the university. The tutor may be required to implement limited instructional activities in both individual and group tutorial sessions in online/ contact fashion. He/she may be asked to assist with additional tasks to support various pedagogical needs expressed by lecturers of the three-modules course (Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced) at the request of the course coordinator or the HOD.
Some responsibilities of the tutor are listed below:

Tutoring Duties
Teaching and Learning:
·      Loading PowerPoint lessons on LMS.
·      Scheduling lessons for the required date and time.
·      Assisting in gathering daily classwork results from LMS and entering it into excel marksheet.
·      Assist with group work activities in or outside the classroom.
·      Respond to specific student queries virtually on real time or in contact session especially for emergent speakers.
·      Assist with pre-exam revision.
·      Arrange handouts for tutor session and or online materials distribution.
·      Collect and collate material for student handbooks.
·      Support classes from level one to six when deemed necessary.
·      Bridging, lessons, and homework support.
·      Participate in marks consolidation, checking and calculations.
·      Guide and facilitate students learning through difficult material both online and in contact.
·      Submit completed tutoring reports for all sessions within three days to coordinator and or HOD.
·      Participate actively during orientation.

Communication:
·      Assist in handling students’ query regarding lesson content / or offering to clarify lesson instructions.
·      Make follow-ups on challenged students extra tasks given by the lecturer and ensure these are submitted on time.
·      Assist students with U-Link and /or Library registrations.
·      Assist student with basic computer literacies.
·      Provide adequate notice to UJELP coordinator or HOD for any class or computer-lab shift absences.
 
Research:
·      To search and find quality pieces (video/pictures/ audio) for lessons as requested beforehand.
·      Search for appropriate literature and material aligned to EFL and language testing.

Additional Academic Development and Support
·      Handle boarding to UJELP online system, email activation.
·      Respond to specific inquiries and requests from “outbound” student in an expected timely manner.
·      Online submissions, video production, MS Teams for test and exam.

Troubleshooting for academic and personal matters
·      Actively engage students by asking questions that will facilitate their understanding.
·      Encourage students to improve their study methods.
·      Maintain a professional attitude and helpful behaviour.
·      Provide constructive and accurate feedback on all tutoring records.
·      Manage tutoring appointments in a dependable manner and communicate any schedule changes with all parties involved.
·      Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
·      Attend UJELP training workshops and meetings as required.
·      Uphold Academic Integrity policies of the university.
·      Respect of cultural and individual differences. 

Minimum requirements

  • Diploma / Degree (preferred major: English / or EILTS/ TEOFL/ online teaching English).
  • Proven skills on excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • A minimum of 1 year in mentoring or tutoring experience.

  • Patient with good listening skills

Competencies:
  • English language (writing, reading, speaking and listening) - HIGH
  • Familiarity with google class, MS Teams, ZOOM, etc. - MEDIUM
