The UJ Social Work and Community Development Department's vision is to be a centre of excellence in social work and community development education, committed to social justice and human development in an African context. We subscribe to the social development approach in our curriculum and are continually working towards a decolonial education.
 
Job Description:

The purpose of this post is to teach community development at undergraduate and postgraduate levels within the ambit of the Department of Social Work and Community Development.

Responsibilities: 
 
  • Lecture community development subjects on the bachelor’s, honour’s and master’s programmes
  • Facilitate community development internship classes
  • Conduct own research and publish articles in accredited journals
  • Supervise postgraduate students
  • Be involved in relevant community engagement
  • Share in academic and administrative tasks commensurate with academic level

Minimum requirements

  • PhD
  • At least three years’ post qualifying experience of community development practice
  • At least three years’ experience of teaching, supervision and assessment in higher education, together with a clear teaching philosophy and evidence or examples of how this philosophy is implemented in practice
  • At least two DoHET publication units with a focus on macro issues and/or practice

  • Management skills, including networking, conflict management, quality assurance.

  • Evidence of significant contribution in the broader sector (e.g., national or international community development, academic or research niche domains)
  • Evidence of involvement in the professionalization of community development in South Africa
