Job description

The Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Integrated Mineral and Energy Resource Analysis (CIMERA) is funded by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) (previously DST) and the National Research Foundation (NRF). The mission of DSI-NRF CIMERA is to conduct cutting edge integrated geological, geochemical, geometallurgical, and geophysical research on mineral and (non-renewable) energy resources in South Africa and Africa. The research is of economic and societal benefit to the region and continent, enhancing the minerals industry in general. DSI-NRF CIMERA is hosted in the Department of Geology, University of Johannesburg, and co-hosted by the School of Geosciences, University of the Witwatersrand. 

Job Description: 

DSI-NRF CIMERA funds postgraduate and applied research projects in economic geology, to build the supply of properly qualified human capital for the future of the mineral and energy resource industries on the continent and abroad, and to conduct cutting edge research. The CoE Research Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of the CoE, under the guidance of the Director and Co-Director, to achieve the purpose and goals. 

Responsibilities:  
 
  • Branding and digital media content
  • Marketing and outreach 
  • Collate statistics on CoE performance
  • Pre- and post-grant management
  • Ability to manage and support the Director and Co-Director.
  • Development of strategy documents and compilation of technical reports. 
  • Ability to understand contracting and financial management.
  • Involvement in arrangement of colloquium, workshops, short courses, steering committee meetings, etc.
  • Work with the on-line NRF system and compile required documents.
  • 1st point of contact for all CoE enquiries

Minimum requirements

  • A tertiary degree, Honours degree or equivalent, preferably in geosciences or related discipline.
  • Experience in management role, 5 years or more.
  • Proficiency in project management.
  • Proficiency in marketing and social media, and outreach. 
  • Proficiency in preparation of professional reports.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
  • Communication and management skills. 
 
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes: 

  • Fully computer literate (MS Excel, Word, Power Point), and have an excellent grasp on written and verbal English.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: must be approachable and available to students, academics, and external collaborators.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to think on your feet and to be pro-active.
  • Knowledge of geology and related industries a distinct advantage. 
 
 Recommendations:  
 
  • Willingness to travel, if required.
