Job description

  • Select rare books to buy according to the special niche.
  • Participate in online auctions of rare books.
  • Responsible for the shelving and preservation of rare books.
  • Manage the covering of book jackets, special covers for storage, climate control and restoration of books.
  • Co-ordinate stocktaking and shelf-reading programmes.
  • Render client services for researchers and compile information for virtual users.
  • Compile or edit inventories for objects of special collections.
  • Write articles for the website to promote books and submit articles for the Library Newsletter.
  • Submit material for an online exhibition.

Minimum requirements

  • Degree in Library and Information Science, Knowledge Management or equivalent qualification.
  • Experienced professional librarian who has rendered information services or has assisted researchers.
  • Good writing skills in the English language.
  • Knowledge about paper conservation or the storage of rare books.
  • Experience in book selection.

  • Efficiency in English and comprehension in Afrikaans reading (related to materials in our collections)

Recommendations:

  • Collection management experience.
  • Knowledge of Afrikaans/German/French or a Northern Sotho language.
  • Experience in exhibitions/the care of and indexing of objects.
  • Knowledge of the auction system of buying special collection materials
