Job description

The UJ Process, Energy and Environment Technology Station (UJ PEETS) is funded by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) through the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA). The primary mandate of UJ PEETS is technology transfer and human-capacity development for Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs) within the national context of South Africa. PEETS is tasked to improve the competitiveness of industry through the application of specialised knowledge and technology innovation by facilitating the interaction between industry and the University. In this regard, UJ PEETS is looking for a Technology Station Engineer to be engaged on a 3-year fixed-term contract to head up the Air Quality focus area in the Environmental Engineering Unit, specifically focused on environmental impact assessment, air quality monitoring and evaluation to support industry compliance to relevant legislation.
 
UJ PEETS Station Engineers are required to source, plan, manage, and implement projects within the UJ PEETS focus areas: Air Quality. Applicants must have knowledge of green economy sectors and the technical ability to develop technology innovation to support SMMEs in this sector.
 
Station Engineers are required to develop strategic goals for their respective focus area, assist in sourcing additional funding through engagement with external stakeholders, providing technical support and facilitate knowledge transfer to support SMMEs, liaising with research groups at UJ and external stakeholders, successfully identify, implement and execute projects at the station, applying science and engineering principles and overseeing junior engineers, technologist and interns assigned to projects, ensuring quality work and accurate reporting.
 
PEETS Station Engineers are required to source, plan, manage, and implement projects within the PEETS focus areas: Energy, Water and Sanitation, Environmental Impact, Waste management and Renewables. Applicants must have knowledge of green economy sectors and the technical ability to develop technology innovation to support SMEs.
 
Responsibilities: 
Candidates applying for the position of station engineer should be able to:
·       Provide technical support, knowledge transfer and capacity building to support SME’s in the green economy by providing engineering services, specifically linked to environmental impact, resource efficiency and cleaner production, and air quality auditing to support industry compliance to relevant legislation.
·       Recommend innovative technology solutions to SME’s supporting the green economy by providing the following engineering services to clients:
o  Engineering Consultation
o  Air Quality Auditing
o  Environmental Impact Assessment
o  Product and Process Development, Improvement and Optimisation
o  Technology Research and Development
o  Prototype development and Assembly
o  Training and Demonstration
·       Source, plan, implement, and project manage technical projects, supervising junior engineers, technologists, laboratory staff, students and interns on technical projects as needed, including project budgeting, quality control, procurement management and reporting, ensuring that projects are delivered to specification and reported timeously, complying with defined station processes and procedures
·       Liaise with clients and implement UJ PEETS Standard Operating Procedure, reporting on project progress and manging any risks or contingencies to deliver projects to specification, on time and within budget, following ISO 9001 quality management principles
·       Develop a strategy and operational plan for their respective focus area and ensure execution of the strategy which include staff development plan and budgeting.
·       Source funding through various channel such as government agency for the focus area to ensure that the focus area generate income and engage with industry to generate proposals for funding
·       Coordinate major project funding applications from industry and agency partners to the Technology Innovation Agency
·       Work closely with the Academic staff and Technology Transfer Office on technology innovation and commercialisation projects linked to the Technology Station focus areas
·       Support R&D, carry out or oversee laboratory work to develop new products and processes for industry, complying to SABS and ISO quality standards
·       Publish findings in accredited journals and support research output in partnership with researchers at UJ
·       Provide training and lead technology demonstration sessions to SMMEs and students
·       Ensure that the PEETS building is Green and support UJ campus greening initiatives


Minimum requirements

·       Appropriate Master in Technology (MTEch) degree, qualification relating to either chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, civil engineering, or mining engineering.
·       Or 4 year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (B.Eng) or equivalent qualification in fields that relate to process optimisation, environmental impact, with specific focus air quality monitoring and evaluation, auditing and legislation.
·       The candidate must have 3 years project management and industry experience.

Recommendations:

  • The candidate must have experience and competence in air quality monitoring and auditing, environmental impact and risk assessment, specifically linked to environmental health and air quality, supporting industry compliance to relevant legislation.
  • ·       The candidate should have knowledge of business development, commercialisation, and industrialisation of intellectual property.
  • ·       The candidate must have demonstrated ability to publish conference papers, books, book chapters and journal papers.
  • ·       Work independently and should be able to travel and implementing projects across the country.
