Job description

- Teaching innovation and using a blended learning approach including using technology assisted teaching, learning and assessment practices.
- Actively participate in administration tasks of the department including but not limited to the tasks of curriculum design and administrations related to teaching, supervision, research and community engagement.
- Conducting research and research supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students in GIS and remote sensing related topics, and securing research funding.
- Publishing research outputs in nationally and internationally accredited outlets including peer-reviewed conferences, journals and books.
- Be actively involved in national and global collaboration opportunities, in both research and teaching and learning initiatives.
- Initiating and participating in the department’s community engagement initiatives.
- Networking with industries to source student work placement opportunities.
- Must be able to develop course material for undergraduate and postgraduate modules required in the Department of of Geography, Environmental Management and Energy Studies.
Minimum requirements
- A minimum of a Master’s degree in Geography with a research focus on GIS and remote sensing.
- Experience in undergraduate, postgraduate teaching and research supervision or mentoring in Higher Education.
- Experience in publishing in academically recognised conference proceedings, journals and/or books.
- Extensive experience in GIS and remote sensing computing software such as ESRI products, QGIS, ERDAS, ENVI, R, Python, Google Earth Engine, etc.
- Experience in conducting field research.
- Broad knowledge in the concepts of GIS and remote sensing as well as their application to a wide range of disciplines.
- Competence in using relevant software programmes for spatial analysis.
- Knowledge in ‘Big Data’ with respect to GIS and remote sensing.
- Solid acquaintance with spatial data sources nationally and globally.
- Knowledge in open source and cloud computing software
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
- Excellent teaching and motivational skills
- Strong analytical and numerically evidenced thinking
- Good planning, organisational and time management skills
- Strong interpersonal skills that support collaboration with others and working as a team member
- Excellent computer skills
- Computer coding skills such as in R and Python
- Statistical analysis and interpretation skills
- Enthusiasm for GIS and remote sensing and their application to earth observation and sustainable environmental management
- Track record of postgraduate supervision and accredited research output in GIS, remote sensing and related disciplines.
- Evidence of engagement with the scholarship of teaching and learning including innovative teaching practices.
- Able to work as an individual and as part of a team.
- Work experience in the area of GIS, remote sensing and related fields.
- Member of a professional body.
- Relevant lecturing experience.
