Job description

The Faculty of Law is actively recruiting for an Associate Professor/Professor who will also be a Vice-Dean Teaching and Learning (for a 3 year term) to assist the Executive Dean of Law in the fulfilment of her duties and to head up this exciting and important portfolio.
 
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • The Vice-Dean Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Law is primarily responsible for the following:
  • Strategic oversight of all matters relating to teaching and learning;
  • Manage strategic teaching and learning projects relating to the Faculty and University’s overall strategic objectives and goals;
  • Represent the Faculty on appropriate University committees and chair the Faculty’s Teaching and Learning Committee;
  • Participate in community service and engagement initiatives pertaining to the teaching and learning portfolio;
  • Advance and strengthen the discipline of the scholarship of teaching and learning;
  • Conduct extensive activities and initiatives to support and promote teaching and learning;
  • Conduct multidisciplinary teaching and learning activities through collaboration with other faculties and University units/centres.
  • Faculty of Law’s Vice-Dean functions in accordance with powers and responsibilities delegated by the Executive Dean according to their Performance Agreements. These delegations are grounded on the Faculty of Law’s and University’s Strategic Plan.
  • The Vice-Dean’s role is to fulfil duties and responsibilities within the Faculty of Law and do not fulfil executive functions external to the Faculty of Law. The Vice-Dean may, from time to time, represent the Executive Dean.
  • Associate Professor/Professor responsibilities:
  • Required to teach, develop and manage curriculum and study materials for modules in South African Law in English at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Supervise postgraduate students;
  • Be actively involved in research and publications, academic development, Faculty and Departmental administrative and other activities and community engagements.

Minimum requirements

  • Relevant doctoral degree.
  • Superior knowledge of South African Legal Education, teaching, learning and research in the higher education environment.
  • Extensive teaching and learning experience.
  • Proven significant and consistent research output.
  • Recognised academic leadership.
  • Specialisation in any of the following areas of law: Private Law, Public Law, Procedural Law, Mercantile Law, or Practical Business Law.

  • Researchers who are rated by the National Research Foundation (South Africa) or substantially at the level of researchers who their peers unequivocally recognise as leading international scholars in their field for the high quality and impact of their recent research outputs.
  • Strong commitment to teaching, research and innovation.
  • Knowledge of blended and hybrid teaching and learning.
