Job description

To investigate all crime and misconduct reported to Protection Services. To keep and analyse statistics of all incidents reported to Protection Services to plan, develop, organise, advise, implement, and participate in a variety of crime prevention and – awareness strategies and campaigns directed to the campus community.
 
Responsibilities: 
        
Investigations

  • Protect the property, person and information (e.g., reports, records) of UJ, staff, students and visitors through investigations.
  • React timeously on callouts.
  • Manage crime scenes according to training & SOP’s until hand-over to SAPS.
  • Ensure that the necessary incident reports, documents, and registers are completed.
  • Document and give an accurate statement of situations both verbally and in writing.
  •  Draft precise investigation reports of high reporting standards.
  • Ensure a friendly, helpful and effective investigation service to all staff, students and visitors.
  • Keep accurate statistics of all crime incidents and security breaches.
  • Gather, preserve, and share evidence pertinent to an investigation in line with the relevant regulations and UJ policies.
  • To actively participate in Community Police Forum (CPF) and other crime prevention forums.
  • Draft management reports as required.
  • Analyse statistics and recommend crime prevention strategies.
  • Conduct full investigations through legally acceptable investigating techniques.
  • Keep up to date with current and latest investigation technology and techniques.
  • Conduct and report on Social media monitoring and environmental scanning.
  • Conduct satisfactory client service surveys.
  • Inspect the enforcement of compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Participate in awareness campaigns.

Crime Prevention

  • Implement and maintain crime prevention campaigns.
  • Conduct security assessments and arrange for building and premises inspections to evaluate security threats/needs. Make recommendations to mitigate the security threats.
  • Analyse incident statistics to determine trends and recommend security measures to prevent further occurrences.
  • To be informed of daily incidents on UJ premises to determine whether preventative actions are required to prevent further occurrences.
  • Ensure all incidents are reported, recorded, and followed up.
 
Crime Awareness

  • Implement and manage crime prevention campaigns.
  • Ensure effective communication with SAPS to ensure continuous feedback on cases reported to the police.
  • Interfaces with the UJ Strategic Communications regarding crime prevention programs and other UJ crime related issues
  • Serve as an information resource as far as crime threats are concerned to the campus community.
  • Writing programs, policies and training manuals; designing and producing brochures, visual aids and other program documents
  • Providing instruction and training to security officers and other departments on crime prevention techniques
  • Preparing and delivering oral presentations in front of student/staff groups
  • Coordinating, implementing, and evaluating curriculums and other various programs; preparing pamphlets, news releases, and bulletins regarding crime prevention events; preparing newsletters; maintaining statistics and preparing reports.

Minimum requirements

  • Degree or any relevant qualification (NQF 7), with 2 to 3 years’ job-related experience in investigations, campus security environment, SAPS, military, Government, or private sector, protection services would be an advantage.
  • Have a valid driver’s licence.
  • Have PSIRA Grade A registration or be eligible for registration.
  • Computer skills (MS Office, MS Power Point and MS Excel).
  • Respond to emergencies on campus within 60 minutes.
  • Be available to work after-hours and weekends.

 Recommendations:

  • Preferred - managerial experience in an investigation or campus security environment.
  • Preferred- qualification in Law, Forensic Audit or Risk Management.
  • Preferred- 5-years’ experience, investigator in campus environment, SAPS, Government, or private sector.
