Job Description:
This appointment will have a close working relationship with the Executive Director: Facilities Management and the leadership of the University. The Senior Director: Infrastructure Development and Logistics reports to the Executive Director who has a reporting line to the Chief Operating Officer. The primary responsibility of the Senior Director is to provide leadership and skills, in assisting the Executive Director leading the Facilities Division to fulfil its mandate.

The role covers all four UJ campuses and other UJ facilities, namely Kingsway, Bunting Road, Doornfontein and Soweto, JBS Park and off campus facilities.

  • Determine, articulate, and implement strategic initiatives in accordance with the University’ strategic goals to enhance the University’s operations.
  • Provide strategic guidance and leadership for the full operational function of the University at a central level, as well as the dedicated operational functions of the four campuses under the control of Senior Director: Campus Facilities Management
  • Determine, articulate, implement, and lead divisional-based strategic initiatives to enhance the Division’s reputation and performance in accordance with the UJ’s Strategic Plan 2025 to enhance and support global excellence and stature
  • Plan and execute capital projects, including but not exclusive to infrastructure, maintenance and preventative maintenance, municipal services and emergency power, grounds and sports, student centres, micro-computer laboratories, and the fixed- property portfolio
  • Assume executive responsibility for key Operations / Facilities Management projects in line with set project timelines
  • Coordinate and provide strategic guidance and Executive Management functions to Senior Director: Campuses, as well as to various central specialist sections
  • Strengthen relationships with stakeholders and partners, nationally and internationally
  • Promote the Division in broader national and international contexts
  • Oversee staff development and management, including retention and recruitment
  • Respond to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) funding, teaching, and learning as well as research and innovation-related policy documents, draft proposals and reports and initiate policy
  • Manage risks within the Portfolio
  • Manage environmental compliance and sustainability


Minimum requirements

  • Postgraduate qualification (NQF Level 9) and possess extensive and demonstrable 10 years' executive management experience
  • Substantive Operations / Facilities Management experience, with an appropriate postgraduate qualification as a minimum
  • Sound knowledge, insight, and a strategic vision with regards to Operations / Facilities Management in the Higher Education sector
  • Substantial Management and leadership experience in operations, construction, mining or engineering
  • Extensive technical knowledge of, and experience in, the operational environment of large multi-dimensional organisations
  • Proven resource, project and contractor management, sound experience in strategic management and people management skills, with exceptional ability and resilience to function under pressure
  • A dynamic and responsive leader, with a well-established and acknowledged success record, high-level administrative skills, along with the ability to develop and maintain good networks
  • A well-respected leader who can inspire and motivate the academic community, students, alumni, and external stakeholders in the University’s to provide innovative best Operations / Facilities Management -related practices
