Job Description:  

  • The Academic Director is responsible for planning, directing and co-ordinating the School’s teaching and learning, research, community engagement and formal academic programme delivery activities.
  • The incumbent takes responsibility for quality assurance of the content from a design and delivery perspective of all of all programmes, and the efficient and effective course development and delivery’
  • The incumbent will also assist to facilitate and encourage the successful achievement of intellectual activities and research outputs at the school.
  • The position plays a pivotal role in the financial and academic sustainability of the JBS in as far as the enrolment plans are successfully achieved.
  • In conjunction with the Dean of School, the incumbent will lead the team of academic faculty towards the achievement of their strategic goals.
  • The Academic Director will ultimately ensure adherence to the governance aspects of the programmatic rules and regulations of the academic programmes at JBS, as well as concomitant higher degrees related academic policies
 
Responsibilities: 
 
The incumbent will be responsible for the –
 
  • Management of academic programmes;
  • Academic programmes recruitment, selection and enrolment;
  • Management of throughput;
  • Managing the student’s teaching and learning experience;
  • Quality assurance of academic programmes, from a design and materials development perspective;
  • Financial management and sustainability of academic programmes; and
  • JBS-UJ Values, including academic / higher degrees governance and programmatic regulatory requirements. 

Minimum requirements

  • A recognised Master’s degree.
  • At least five (5) years of management experience in a director level position required, ideally within a higher education institution, preferably a business school.
  • Knowledge and experience in designing and delivering business school academic programmes, including teaching and learning materials.
  • Working knowledge of rules and regulations that pertain to higher degrees at public universities in South Africa.
  • Academic thought leadership.
  • Demonstrate ability to build relationships and think critically.

Recommendations:

  • A relevant doctoral qualification
  • Ten (10) years’ experience in in higher education and of which a minimum of five (5) years must have been in academic leadership and management.
  • Knowledge of higher education regulations, policies and procedures,
  • Commercial/corporate business experience will serve as a recommendation.
