Job description

The Council of the University of Johannesburg has declared the University as a mandatory vaccination site as per the applicable policy ((https://www.uj.ac.za/covid-19/). All applications and offers of employment is dependent upon compliance with the said policy.


Student Finance is a support division under the Financial Revenue and Governance department. The division is responsible for administration of NSFAS funding, Bursaries and Student debtors. Student Finance strives to provide excellent service to all students, parents, sponsors, donors, internal and external clients. The division is decentralised across all campuses where NSFAS, Bursaries and student account enquiries can be accessed. NSFAS is an acronym for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. NSFAS is a statutory body, funded primarily by South Africa's National Department of Higher Education and Training, providing study loans and bursaries to academically deserving and financially needy students who wish to study at one of South Africa's public higher education institutions. NSFAS has appointed the University of Johannesburg (UJ) to administer funds on its behalf at UJ.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintains NSFAS control accounts
  • Maintains Bursaries control accounts
  • Maintains student debtors control accounts
  • Reconciles high volumes of accounts on a weekly and monthly basis
  • Compiles and submit reports and reconciliation
  • Reports on reconciliations and performance of external debt collectors
  • Timeously allocate NSFAS, and bursaries funding allocations
  • Oversees the day-to-day operations of reconciliation division
  • Oversees monthly balancing of general ledger reports

Minimum requirements

  • B. Com degree in accounting or equivalent
  • Minimum of three years financial experience within a Student Finance environment
  • Experience in a Higher Education environment within Finance environment (Added advantage)
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting principles

  • Proven ability to calculate, post and manage accounting figures and financial records

  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office (Excel) essential
  • Display a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure
