Job description

1.      General Maintenance:

  • Work tasks are completed to the satisfaction of the building foreman and the Technical Manager of the department.
  • Perform locksmith duties, fitting of various doors, door closers and other associated fittings.
  • Do minor cupboards installation from time to time when the need arise.
  • Ascertain that preventative maintenance measure is completed in accordance with the university policy and procedures.
  • Reconfigures, installation, positions, and remounts modular offices and space (e.g. furniture, wall panels, work surfaces, storage bins, lighting, file cabinets, etc.) to accommodate user needs and maximize office space using various hand, power and specialty tools.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory of equipment, tools and supplies.
 
2.    Liaison and Monitoring:
 
  • Follow-up with clients to ensure that the job cards are completed correctly, ensure client satisfaction and escalate any issues to the Supervisor/Maintenance Manager.
  • Promptly and attentively respond to customer requests within established parameters and time frames.
  • Work collaboratively with external contractors on any project assigned to the Maintenance Services Department.
  • Effectively communicate with staff, students and visitors.
  • Review customer requests and seek clarification as needed.
 
3.    Compliance and Quality Assurance:
 
  • Ensure that all activities are performed in compliance with the University’s Occupational, Health & Safety policies and procedures.
  • Inspect all electrical installation after completion and ensure that a valid certificate of compliance is issued.
  • Assist in compiling the scope of work and specification for projects.
  • Assess or check with customer to ensure solution meets request.
 
4.    General Repairs & Support:

  • Monitor on-site spares, materials, and inventory for the carpentry and arrange material list for quotations if there are items that need to be ordered.
  • Weekly and monthly inspection of doors, glasses, floor tiles, ceilings, mirrors and cupboards.
  • Assist other stakeholders, like Protection Services with any carpentry related work Include specification and advise if the need arises. 

Minimum requirements

To qualify, you need to have:

  • Carpentry Trade Test 
  • Matric or grade 12
  • Three years’ appropriate experience in carpentry, building & civils, and maintenance.

Competencies:

  • Knowledge of Building Regulations.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
  • Ability to carry out inspections, identify risks, and come up with corrective measures.
  • Good planning, organisational skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritise and work under pressure.
  • Ability to use own initiative and work independently.
  • Ability to lead others in troubleshooting.
  • The ability to handle conflict situations in a diplomatic manner and have social perceptiveness.

 Recommendations:
 
  • Basic knowledge of blinds repairs.
  • Basic knowledge glass fitting.
  • Basic knowledge of paining
  • Basic knowledge of floor tiling.
  • Basic computer skills.
