Job description

The Department of Metallurgy is searching for a well-organized, innovative professor to join our established department. The professor's responsibilities will include research, teaching in extractive metallurgy and in particular hydrometallurgy. The role should contribute positively to industries we serve; while developing course material and curricula, inspiring meaningful discussions, attending conferences, mentoring and consulting with other academic and professionals, supervising graduate & postdoctoral fellows, and being an active member of the university (participating in committees).
 
Responsibilities: 
 
  • Undertake research duties, lecturing duties and the associated functions of preparation, assessment, moderation, and curriculum development while serving the community.

Teaching and Learning:

  • Preparing and delivering lectures (for Extractive Metallurgy modules(Hydrometallurgy, Mineral's processing), tutorials, workshops, and seminars.
  • Developing curricula and course material that can be used across a number of platforms.
  • Collaborating with other academics and lecturers to improve teaching methods and expand knowledge base.

Academic Leadership and Research:

  • Attracting funding, conducting research, writing papers, proposals, journal articles and books.
  • Attending and participating in meetings, committees, conferences, and other events in and outside of the institution.
  • Participating in training opportunities and initiatives at the institution.

General Academic Administration:

  • Students records and academic monitoring.
  • Ensure compliance with ECSA requirements.
  • Expectations of registrations to relevant professional bodies.

Community engagement:

  • Service learning and
  • Community based research

Minimum requirements

  • Ph.D in Metallurgy
  • More than 5 years teaching experience in Extractive Metallurgy
  • Research experience in Hydrometallurgy

Recommendations:
  • Worked in a hydrometallurgy environment or related mineral processing plants
  • Industrial Chemistry an added advantage
  • Teaching experience in Hydrometallugy
  • Research focused
  • Opportunity to register with Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) within 2 years.
  • Opportunity to be NRF rated within 2 years.
  • Reasonable (>10) H-Index and cited research outputs
