Job Description:

The UJ Occupational Health Practice (OHP) is a unit operating from the Campus Health Clinics on all four campuses and reporting to the Registrar’s portfolio. Operating with a contracted Occupational Medical Practitioner, Head: OHP and Occupational Health Nurse Practitioners (OHNP) per campus. The OHP operates under the designation of the Director-General: National Department of Health, whereby OHNP are authorized to practice and dispense medication. The health risk-based approach of the OHP implies regular inclusive collaboration and consultation with internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities:  
 
In particular, the incumbent will:
 
  • Deliver professional occupational health services to the UJ community following the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, by:
  • Implementing Health Surveillance Matrix prescribed and updated by Occupational Medical Practitioner.
  • Conduct Spirometry, Audiometry, biological monitoring, Baseline, periodic and exit medical assessments of at-risk groups.
  • Uptake of the annual medical surveillance program as per the Practice scorecard.
  • Uptake of Occupational Health Risk Assessment plan as per the Practice scorecard.
  • Create a safe and secure environment in the preparation of Cultural and Academic events by facilitating requests for medical standby.
  • Management of Injuries on duty.
  • Knowledge of pre- and post-travel assessments, vaccinations, and travel bag preparation. Quarterly and annual report writing.
  • Ability to initiate and manage Preventative & Promotive Health Campaigns like influenza, November campaign, etc
  • Confidential record-keeping of clients and clinic administration.
  • Ability to create a welcoming, caring and service-orientated environment for employees, students, and visitors.
  • Ability to network with internal and external stakeholders.

Minimum requirements

  • Diploma in General Nursing (general, psychiatric and community health) and Midwifery
  • Occupational Health Nursing Science degree/diploma
  • Certificates in Audiometry and Spirometry
  • Dispensing license
  • Good communication skills
  • The ability to function under pressure and be responsive.

 Recommendations:
 
  • 2-3 years of working experience in an Occupational Health environment.
  • Ability to conduct Spirometry, vision screening and Audiometry.
  • Experiences in working in a university environment will be an added advantage.
  • Computer literacy.
