Job description

Responsibilities:

To design, configure, implement, and maintain required server and storage infrastructures, required to perform the various functions that enables the use of evolving technologies that support highly available infrastructure in hybrid environments where on premise and multi-cloud services are combined to provide agility and improve service delivery while supporting the ICT 4.0 Strategy.

Planning, Design and Development of Infrastructure
• Ensures that infrastructure planning and design are in line with the general strategy of the ICS division
• Delivers on significant Infrastructure and storage projects.
• Creates a well-informed infrastructure strategy and manage the adoption process.
• Produces standards and guidelines where required to enable rapid standardised deployments of technology where automation will be utilized.
• Evaluate and review new infrastructure technologies.

Infrastructure Administration
• Maintains the complex server network design.
• Reports on Infrastructure performance.
• Capacity planning.

Infrastructure Architecture
• Experience in solutions architecting.
• Implements and maintains the server and server network infrastructures.
• Identifies the relevant infrastructure solutions to successfully meet the strategic needs of the university.

Maintenance and Support
• Assesses infrastructure and environment needs on projects and systems and to recommend solutions that conform to architectural blueprints and guidelines.
• Maintains and resolves the infrastructure related problems.
• Troubleshoots the server infrastructure and maintain the smooth running thereof.
• Monitors and takes care of all the services offered through the infrastructure.
• Works closely with the Information Security Officer to monitor the university’s secure infrastructure.
• Responds to technical issues in a professional and timely manner.
• Provides guidance in infrastructure movement techniques including application transfers into the cloud.
• Ensure optimal, secure functionality of systems by ensuring software operating systems and infrastructure hardware patches and firmware upgrades are being applied on a regular basis or when zero-day vulnerabilities have been identified.
• Manage the hardware lifecycle of the server infrastructure.

Professional and Personal Development
Stays abreast of new trends in technology by attending workshops, training, and conferences.

Minimum requirements

  • Relevant Undergraduate qualification (NQF 7) with 5 to 8 years’ relevant experience, or
  • Relevant Professional Certification (Technical/Specialised positions) (NQF 7) with 5 years’ experience in relevant specialist skills.
  • Minimum 5 years proven experience in:
o Relevant server and storage infrastructure technologies.
o Server hardware and virtual configurations, private cloud, clusters, and virtual environments (Hyper-V, VMWare, and vSphere)
 Compute, storage, and networking.
o 5 years’ experience - Microsoft and Linux Operating Systems
 
• Supporting the Microsoft stack including Office 365, SharePoint, be skilled with Active Directory, Azure hybrid cloud, and PowerShell.
• Effective communication.
• Relevant hardware, application, and software certifications.
