Job description

The Department of Civil Engineering currently has a vacant post for a Laboratory Technical Assistance. The Department of Civil Engineering Science, Auckland Park Kingsway Campus (APK), is a broad-based teaching institution covering all major aspects of Civil Engineering Science. The department would like to expand its expertise in supporting teaching strategy and equipment support. Applications are sought from candidates with expertise in Civil Engineering.  

Responsibilities:
  
  • Prepare lab equipment for upcoming research experiments
  • Perform laboratory tests
  • Assist students during Practicals and research work
  • Report data and compile information into graphs and documents
  • Clean and maintain lab equipment
  • Gather data and information from test subjects
  • Monitor ongoing tests and experiments, noting any differences

Minimum requirements

  • Grade 12 (NQF 4)
  • BEng/BTech or Diploma in Civil Engineering Science or closely related field- Advantageous 
  • A minimum of 3 years’ technical experience (in a tertiary institution will be an advantage)
  • A proven track record of technical ability, and trouble shooting in a laboratory environment
  • Evidence of working with different Lab equipment’s
  • Research and analysis skills 
 
Recommendations: 

  • Industrial experience in civil engineering would be advantageous
  • Supportive of academic culture, excellence, and research support
  • Good technical aptitude, having experience in project work
  • Willingness to pursue further studies and register with relevant professional councils - ECSA 
 
Competencies: 

  • Sound ability to communicate with students, and staff – as well as in the teaching and learning environment
  • Reporting, and supervisory skills
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Maintenance, and calibration of equipment in laboratories
  • Knowledge of computer research and analysis programs
