Job description

The Council of the University of Johannesburg has declared the University as a mandatory vaccination site as per the applicable policy ((https://www.uj.ac.za/covid-19/). All applications and offers of employment is dependent upon compliance with the said policy.

The Department of Civil Engineering Science has vacant positions for a Lecturer and a Senior Lecturer.
  • Present lectures to Undergraduate and Honours Students.
  • Develop new course/module material as well as practical guides for undergrad, Honours modules and/or Short Learning Programmes (SLPs);
  • Participate in research production and supervision of undergraduate, Honours and Postgraduate students in the department/Faculty.
  • Participation in voluntary associations and/or professional bodies;
  • Active Participation in Department administration activities

Minimum requirements

Senior Lecturer
  • PhD in Civil Engineering or a closely related (or equivalent);
  • A minimum of five years teaching experience at a tertiary institution, or
  • Evidence of research outputs, postgraduate supervision and presentations at national and international conferences.
  • Registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) or must undertake to do so within three (3) months of joining the department.
  • A minimum of three years industrial experience.

  • Master’s in civil engineering or a closely related
  • A minimum of two years teaching experience at a tertiary institution, or
  • Registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) or must undertake to do so within three (3) months of joining the department.
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

  • Good communication skills (written and verbal with high level of proficiency in English
  • Good oral communication in at least one other language 
  • Good planning and organisational skills
  • Computer literacy including MS Office (MS Word and Excel)
