Job description

To direct and manage Employment Relations (ER) for the University of Johannesburg in partnership with 'relevant stakeholders. To provide strategic and expert advice and opinions on all related Human Resources matters which may influence the employment relationship with all stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

Strategic Employment Relations:

• Develop ER strategy and ensure implementation thereof.
• Lead dispute resolution and collective bargaining processes.
• Develop, update, and maintain the relevant ER Policies and Procedures including Employee Conditions of Services.
• Assist management and employees with matters related to discipline, grievances, and incapacity management.
• Conduct ER audits and provide proactive interventions.
• As head of ER, lead the Executive-Management in formal labour structures and negotiation processes.

ER Advisory Service:

• Ensure compliance and alignment of ER processes within the South African labour legislation framework.
• Identify and analyse ER training needs and provide relevant training intervention and guidance.
• Support, advise and guide managers and other stakeholders on staff management matters.
• Educate line managers on conditions of services.
• Specialist ER opinions and advise considering the legislative and operational requirements

Stakeholder Management:

• Manage all stakeholder relationships within the context of the South African labour framework.
• Develop and manage employment relations service level agreements (SLA's).
• Liaise with external legal advisors for use on specific assignments.
• Consult with the Executive Director: Human Resources and the Chief Operating Officer on relevant ER matters.

Wellness:

• Oversee the effective implementation of Wellness programs and interventions targeted interventions.
• Manage the link between Wellness and ER, that Wellness related matters are dealt with effectively.

General:

• Manage all employment risks on behalf of the Institution.
• Ensure effective governance when dealing with ER and Wellness matters.
• Analyse trends relating to changes or amendments in labour legislations and ensure a link to UJ processes and update relevant persons where appropriate.
• Line Management of ER and Wellness Teams
• Perform ad hoc duties as directed by the Executive.
• Report writing.

Minimum requirements

  • Postgraduate qualification (NQF 8) with specialisation in Labour Law and / or Employment Relations
  • 10 – 12 years HR/ER experience broken down as follows:
  • At least 8 years solid ER management experience
  • At least 3 years’ experience in managing an ER function
  • At least 3 years’ experience with Labour union or other Labour structures is essential or
  • At least 2 years Human Resources general experience
