Job description

The Department of Graphic Design, Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture is recruiting a communication design lecturer to teach Communication Design and Communication Design Technology to undergraduate and Honours students as well as contribute more broadly to student satisfaction, graduate output and progression to postgraduate study in the department.
 
Responsibilities:  
 
  • Teach Adobe Creative Suite™ software skills to undergraduate students
  • Manage departmental computer laboratory and equipment
  • Undertake year and/or module coordination
  • Facilitate selected units of learning in Communication Design modules in the BA Communication Design and BA Honours in Design programmes
  • Prepare and present formal lectures and provide consultation opportunities in both face-to-face and online teaching environments
  • Facilitate tutorials for undergraduate students
  • Support students to compile a competent body of communication design work and present design concepts according to industry standards
  • Conduct student assessments and moderation according to the rules and regulations of the University
  • Work with the team of colleagues who teach in a module and/or year programme(s)
  • Participate in curriculum innovation and the production of educational materials
  • Participate in discipline or industry conferences, workshops and seminars
  • Contribute to the supervision of post-graduate students
  • Contribute to departmental outreach and community engagement programmes
  • Maintain links with industry
  • Participate in departmental marketing efforts, specifically social media presence
  • Represent the department on one or more faculty committees
  • Conduct research resulting in accredited textual and/or accredited creative output
  • Continue to improve academic qualifications

Minimum requirements

  • A Master's degree in a relevant discipline such as Design, Communication Design, Information Design, Graphic Design, Advertising or Illustration
  • Experience in teaching design-related software, such as Adobe Creative Cloud™
  • Experience of management of a Microsoft™-based computer laboratory
  • Experience in module and/or academic year programme administration
  • Experience in teaching a variety of communication design projects, such as branding, brand activation, packaging, web design, illustration and photography
  • A strong portfolio of recent communication design work
 
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

  • Excellent working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud™ (Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator)
  • Good working knowledge of Blackboard™, MS Word™ and Excel™
  • Excellent administrative skills
  • Excellent English communication skills
  • Self-motivated, inspirational and enthusiastic lecturer.
  • Excellent time management and good organising, planning, and writing skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills that acknowledge different cultural perspectives
  • The ability to work in a team context
  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances
  • A keenness to investigate and implement new teaching and learning approaches
 
Recommendations:

•   At least one year’s industry experience, and/or professional freelance design projects undertaken for industry clients over the past two years
