Job description

The University of Johannesburg invites suitably qualified individuals to apply for the position of Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in the School of Economics.
 
The School of Economics is one of six schools within the College of Business & Economics (CBE). The core activity of the School of Economics is to train economists in various fields of economics (financial engineering, industrial policy, development economics, local government economics, econometrics, competition & regulation economics, environmental economics, and trade economics).
 
The successful candidate for this post is expected to support our Development Economics programme by performing full academic duties that include teaching, postgraduate supervision, and research.
 
 
Responsibilities:  
 
The incumbent will be expected to:
 
  • Have strong knowledge of the fields of Economic theories and Quantitative technics applicable to sustainable development issues.
  • Be able to lecture and supervise Master's/PhD students in Economics, based on current and/or past experience at similar levels.
  • Be able to conduct and publish high-quality research.

Minimum requirements

For appointment at Associate Professor Level:

  • A minimum requirement of a relevant PhD degree with strong quantitative background.
  • Sound knowledge of Economic theories, Mathematics and Advanced Econometrics for development, at postgraduate level.
  • Appropriate teaching and practical experience, proven research ability.
  • Five to ten years’ experience in lecturing at a Higher Education Institution.
  • The ability to publish research findings in high-ranked accredited/peer-reviewed journals is the most important requirement for the position. 
  • The candidate must be willing to teach in other areas of economics when required.
  • An excellent record of recent and relevant academic publications.
  • Experience in supervising postgraduate students at PhD and master’s level.
  • Proven knowledge and experience in Research Methodologies relevant to the Economics discipline at postgraduate level.
  • Proven ability to think critically, analytically, and laterally across disciplines and sectors (transdisciplinary).
  • Fluent in written and oral English communication.
  • Strong knowledge of advanced mathematics/statistics and different econometrics packages (Eviews, MATLAB, R, Stata).

For appointment at Senior Lecturer Level:

  • Working knowledge of soft-ware packages in the fields of statistics and econometrics.
  • The ability to publish in high-impact journals.
  • The ability to supervise graduate students.
  • Research management skills.
  • Overall management skills.

 Recommendation:

  • An NRF rating (or equivalent), or the capability of obtaining one within three to five years.
  • Knowledge of online teaching methodologies.
