Job description

To deliver a competitive fitness facility across all campuses to attract members and to increase member retention through effective and innovative business management, building relationships, conducting fitness initiatives and promoting ancillary products and services to members. Responsibilities cover the broad areas of marketing and special events, managing staff and dealing with the technical aspects of fitness provision and health and safety. The manager is also accountable for the overall financial management of the entity.

Responsibilities:  
 
  • Promoting UJ Values: Imagination, Conversation, Regeneration, and Ethical Foundation. Management of the Gymnasiums within UJ Sport.
  • Teamwork and collaboration to ensure the effective drive of all staff to achieve targets.
  • Ensure development and maintenance of key relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintaining high levels of customer care, often with a particular focus on avoiding the loss of existing members.
  • Recruit, appoint, train, and supervise staff, including managing staff in the line of personal development, achieving targets, shift rosters etc.
  • Effective financial management in line with university policies.
  • Plan effective cost control strategy and management of assets.
  • Control of income and expenses to ensure the successful function of Gymnasiums as a business unit.
  • Managing maintenance, insurance, repairs, and acquisition of equipment.
  • Buildings maintenance and cleaning aspects.
  • Ensuring effective access control.
  • Carrying out health and safety checks on the equipment and facilities.
  • Maintaining brand standards and consistency across all facilities.
  • Advertising and promoting facilities to increase usage.
  • Ensure a preferred member experience through the provision of participation opportunities.
  • Play a role in creating a platform for practical and experiential learning for students.

Minimum requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree (NQF Level 7) in Sport, preferably in Sport management or Sport Science
  • Two (2) to (3) three years’ experience in Management of a Gymnasium or Sport related facility Health and fitness working experience
  • Relevant post-graduate Management, health and fitness-related courses 
  • Desirable: Post grad degree in Sports Degree (i.e Sport management or Sport Science) but not compulsory  
  • Required excellent knowledge and skill in the field of health and fitness, sport science, and strength in conditioning for multiple sports at university or semi-elite level. 
  • High competencies in sport specific assessment tools
  • Essential: Level 1 first and desirable: Level 2 First Aid or BLS with AED training Management or other business-related experience is desirable
  • Valid Code B driver’s license
