Job Description:  

  • The Johannesburg Business School is actively recruiting for a Manager: Marketing.
  • The Manager: Marketing will report to the Dean, Johannesburg Business School.
 
Responsibilities: 

The incumbent will be responsible for managing the development and execution of the marketing strategy of the Business School. This will involve

  • To position the School and its programmes/services amongst stakeholders and build a favourable public profile.
  • To develop and articulate a clear understanding of the competitive environment in which the school operates.
  • To conduct market research as necessary to develop an understanding of the operating environment and customers’ needs within the sectors in which the school operates.
  • In collaboration with department heads to identify opportunities to develop the portfolio of revenue-generating programmes/services that the school offers.
  • In collaboration with department heads set clear measurable KPI’s against which strategies can be defined and performance measured.
  • To develop an understanding of market pricing for the various programmes/services that the school offers and to make pricing strategy recommendations in this regard.
  • To optimally allocate marketing resources across the portfolio of programmes/services in order to optimise returns on marketing investment.
  • To identify the target audiences and their needs for the both the school and the portfolio of individual programmes/services it offers, and to develop separate marketing strategies, plans and budgets for each of these.
  • To leverage the relationship and profile of UJ in the development of our strategies.
  • To communicate with and ensure buy-in from relevant stakeholders for the proposed marketing plans.
  • To collaborate with the Centres, and against their agreed objectives develop marketing plans to help deliver these (including leveraging current research topics).
  • Develop a consolidated school marketing calendar of events against which progress can be reported.
  • Develop an internal communication strategy to ensure continual engagement with key stakeholders and staff.
  • Ensure that the school’s marketing strategy, policies and procedures are compliant with the University of Johannesburg (Governance).
  • Propose/justify the school’s annual marketing budget.
  • Implement, monitor, and report against agreed plans on a regular basis (monthly) and adapting the plans according to changing circumstances.
  • Ensure strong internal collaboration and communication is maintained with key stakeholders.
  • Manage expenditures and report against the budget on a regular basis (monthly).
  • Develop the Scope of Work for the appointed advertising agency based upon approved plans.
  • Oversee and manage the school’s advertising agency according to the Scope of Work, and ensuring good governance are maintained.
  • Develop suitable creative campaigns to achieve the desired impact for our various programmes/services.
  • Engage with/manage the school’s media agency to ensure we maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of our campaigns.
  • Ensure that the school’s website is always updated with content appropriate for all targeted audiences.
  • Establish a strong internal network within the School and the relevant UJ ecosystems to promote the position of the school within UJ.
  • Identify and foster relations with external organisations to build mutually beneficial collaborations, and obtain sponsorships/exposure as appropriate.

Minimum requirements

  • Most important is operational marketing management experience and a proven track-record in a strategic marketing, branding and communications role, (three (3) to five (5) years) - preferably in a branded goods or agency environment. Education sector exposure desirable but not essential.
  • A Bachelor’s degree (NQF 7 ) in Marketing/ Communication or a relevant equivalent qualification.
  • Strong practical understanding of the operating environment, networks and mediums of marketing.
  • Strong network in marketing and related industries.
  • Preferably an understanding of the South African and African business education sectors (but not essential).
  • Interest and understanding in market development in Africa and beyond.
