Job description

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A 5 YEAR FIXED TERM CONTRACT

The Centre for Education Rights and Transformation (CERT) is anchored in the ideals of social, political and economic democracy; racial, class, gender and language equity; and diversity in knowledge creation. It defends education and human rights and promotes transformative teaching and learning. CERT focusses on the history and sociology of South African education, international education policy studies, community participation and pedagogies in classrooms, lecture rooms and community halls.

CERT invites applications for the academic post of Professor/Associate Professor.

 Responsibilities: 

  • Recruiting and supervising master’s and doctoral students and post-doctoral research fellows
  • Initiating, applying for funding and managing research projects aligned with the focus of the Centre
  • Playing a significant role in the management of the Faculty journal housed at CERT, Education as Change
  • Liaising closely with the SARCHi Chair in Community, Adult and Worker Education (CAWE)
  • Arrange seminars, colloquiums and symposiums based on the Centre’s research and aims and present at local and international conferences 
  • Involvement in teaching at mainly postgraduate level
  • Providing academic leadership within the Faculty of Education and participation in faculty and institutional committee structures when required
  • Staff development and mentoring of researchers and fellows
  • International collaboration and participation in research projects

 In addition, the candidate may be required to take on the task of managing CERT – thus serve as the director of the Centre. This includes:

  • Overseeing the development and execution of the Centre’s strategic plan in line with the University’s vision, mission and strategic objectives
  • Day to day management of the Centre
  • Administration related to teaching, supervision, research and community engagement.
  • Overseeing quality in relation to the Centre’s core activities
  • Promoting the reputation and standing of the Centre

Minimum requirements

·       Enthusiasm and passion for social justice in education and critical knowledge production in formal and informal settings.
·       Sound community and social movement engagement.

Minimum Requirements for Professor and Associate Professor

·         Applicable PhD/DEd/DPhil degree
·         Teaching experience at the tertiary level
 
Minimum Requirements for Associate Professor

·      Sustained accredited research output (in local and international journals and books/ book chapters)
·      Experience in research project management
·      Experience in postgraduate supervision
 
Minimum Requirements for Professor

·      Prolific accredited research output (in local and international journals and books/ book chapters)
·       Experience in doctoral supervision
·       Extensive experience in research project management and procurement of research funding
·       NRF rating (or output commensurable with an NRF rating)
·       A good record in procuring of research funding
 
Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

·       Excellent written and verbal English communications skills
·       Good planning and organizational skills
·       Good interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues
