Job description

The Faculty of Engineering & Built Environments prides itself in its vibrant, dynamic and diverse engineering community of scholars who are passionate about enhancing the learning experience of students, enhancing the research profile of the Faculty and enhancing the academic, social and economic impact of the Faculty’s teaching and research programmes.
 
Responsibilities: 
  • Teaching, supervise students and conduct research in the areas of materials/structural engineering
  • Substantially published articles in accredited, peer reviewed journals
  • A well-developed quantitative and/or qualitative methodology skills
  • Fulfil leadership roles in the department
  • Be involved in community engagement
  • Being involved in all departmental academic and administrative activities (e.g. invigilation, participation in departmental and faculty meetings)

Minimum requirements

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related (NQF 10 or equivalent)
  • At least five years’ experience in the academic environment.
  • Evidence of research outputs (at least 5 units on accredited journals), postgraduate supervision (at least 5 Masters and 1 Doctoral as main supervisor), and presentations at national and international conferences.

Competencies and Behavioural Attributes:

  • Good communication skills (written and verbal with high level of proficiency in English
  • Good oral communication in at least one other language 
  • Good planning and organisational skills
  • Computer literacy including MS Office (MS Word and Excel)

Recommendations

  • Relevant experience in a Higher Education institution
  • Track record of postgraduate research supervision and publications in the relevant field
  • Preferable in the field of thermal/fluid science with expertise in thermal machines, nano heat transfer/fluid flow. 
  • Proven record of engagement with the scholarship of teaching and learning
  • Innovative teaching and research techniques incorporating technology
