VIAD is an internationally esteemed Research Centre dealing with the overarching thematic of identity construction in visual representation, focusing on African and African-Diasporic art. We are looking to appoint a Team Coordinator I: Operations, on a three-year contract basis (renewable). The appointment will start on 1 September or as soon as possible, with a 6-month probation period.
 
Job Description:
 
The successful incumbent will be responsible for academic and curatorial research associated with VIAD projects, as well as the management, facilitation, and realisation thereof. These local and international projects include conversational platforms, panel discussions, conferences, events, scholarly publications, public programmes and exhibitions, presented online, physically, or in hybrid forms. 
 
1.    Project Coordination
 
  • Work with the VIAD Director and team to identify projects, conceptualise project thematics, aims, objectives and desired outcomes.
  • Put together project timelines and monitoring these.
  • Assist with drawing up project budgets and monitoring these.
  • Liaise with project participants, partners, collaborators, and suppliers.
  • Manage research assistants and interns involved in projects.
  • Oversee and implement all logistical aspects of projects from start to completion.
  • Be responsible for all logistics involved in the organisation and setting up of exhibitions.
  • Liaising with the VIAD administrator on project budgets and financial activities, including budget reporting, and payment of temporary appointees and suppliers.
  • Coordinate quality assurance, project evaluation and impact measurement activities.
  • Keep an up-to-date risk register for projects ensuring that any emerging risks and issues are brought to the attention of the Director.
  • Provide regular project status updates to the Director.
  • Contribute to debriefings on projects and write project reports.

2.   Research
 
  • Conduct research into project thematics, and the work of artists/scholars working in these areas.
  • Source reading materials relevant to project thematics.
  • Draft framing texts, project briefs and press releases.
  • Proofread and copy-edit documents, articles, and other written materials.
  • Give theoretical input on essays, articles, and other written materials.
  • Conduct exhibition walkabouts, public presentations, and discussion groups.
  • Facilitate and/or moderate panel discussions and conversations, in person and online.
  • Identify peer-reviewers and facilitate peer-review processes.
  • Develop personal research (creative or textual) towards research outputs.
 
3.    General
 
  • Assist with or write reports, contracts, and VIAD policy documents.
  • Conduct research into possible funding sources.
  • Gather information for writing of funding proposals and assist with their compilation.
  • Liaise with VIAD Research Associates, Visiting Professors, Post-Doctoral Fellows, FADA and UJ staff members.
  • Liaise with internal and external Research Centres, Research Institutes, Art Galleries/ Museums and cultural organisations. 

Minimum requirements

  • A post-graduate degree (MA, MFA, MTech, MVA) in Visual Arts or related fields.
  • Fluent in written and verbal English and at least one African language.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office 365.
  • Ability to work remotely.
  • Proofreading, copy-editing, and editing skills.
  • Experience of working in a university context.
  • Involvement in local and international academic and artistic communities.

Recommendations:
 
  • A PhD in a Visual Art-related field (either completed or in progress) would be a major advantage.
  • Curatorial or gallery experience would be highly advantageous.
  • Strong networks in international and local art and academic communities, particularly those on the African continent.
  • Design skills and working knowledge of Adobe In-Design, Photoshop, Acrobat and Premiere Pro.
