Job description

The Department of Biotechnology and Food Technology is established in the Faculty of Science at the Doornfontein Campus of the University of Johannesburg with effect from January 2014. The department offers vocationally focussed undergraduate qualifications as well as postgraduate qualifications up to the doctoral level within the disciplines of Biotechnology and Food Technology. It is focused on training scientists, and technologists in Biotechnology and Food Technology for a wide range of industries as well as research in the related fields. This post is focussed on the teaching and learning, and research related to Biotechnology discipline.
 
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate
  • Must be capable of lecturing Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or Bioinformatics.
  • Must demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and productive research and play a leading role in teaching innovation.
  • Must be able to develop course material for Biotechnology modules required in the Department of Biotechnology and Food Technology
  • Must be actively involved in core activities of the department such as academic administration, research, shortcourse development, marketing, and community development projects.
  • Be familiar with South African Biotechnology and Food Industry.

Minimum requirements

  • A MSc in Microbiology or Biotechnology or Biochemistry or Molecular Biology or Bioinformatics.
  • Familiarity with South Africa (SA) Biotechnology or Food Industries.
  • Strong commitment to excellent teaching and research.
  • Work experience in Microbiology or Biotechnology or Biochemistry or Molecular Biology or Bioinformatics

  • Excellent writing and presentation skills.
  • High level of integrity and ethical foundation.
  • Enthusiasm and passion for Research and Community Engagement.
  • Experience in the integration of ICT in teaching and learning as well as electronic assessment techniques e.g. Moodle
 
Recommendations:
 
  • Capable of independent thought and able to work as an individual and within a team.
  • A PhD in Microbiology or Biotechnology or Biochemistry or Molecular Biology or Bioinformatics.
  • Track record of postgraduate supervision and accredited research output in the relevant discipline would be an added advantage.
  • Proven engagement with the scholarship of teaching and learning including innovative teaching practices, include your Teaching portfolio and Teaching Evaluation.
  • A track record for attracting external funding would be an added advantage.
  • Demonstrate potential to build own research group.
  • Ability to develop new undergraduate and postgraduate modules.
  • Able to teach large groups (± 150).
