The Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics offers a wide variety of lecturing and research opportunities. We teach a broad range of modules catering to Mathematics and Applied Mathematics majors and the full range of BSc qualifications, as well as numerous service modules aimed at students in the Faculties of Engineering and the Built 
Environment (FEBE), Economics and Financial Sciences (CBE), Education, and Management. We run vibrant honours 
programmes in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, as well as dynamic MSc and Ph.D. programmes. Research specialties include Abstract Algebra, Algebraic Logic, Applied Differential Equations, Biological Modelling, Category Theory, Dynamical Systems, Fluid Mechanics, Functional Analysis, Graph Theory, Mathematical Physics, Number Theory, and Topology. Our low staff turnover attests to the collegial and cooperative atmosphere that pervades the department.
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Pursuing an active research programme in pure/applied mathematics (ideally in a field that articulates well with the existing research interests of the department) generating a sustained output of high-impact publications and graduate students.
  • Teaching modules in pure/applied mathematics at undergraduate and honours level, and in particular to large groups of undergraduate students.
  • Contributing to departmental outreach and community engagement programmes.
  • Other academic or administrative duties as assigned by the Head of Department.

Minimum requirements

For Senior Lecturer:
  • Ph.D. in Pure or Applied Mathematics.
  • 4 years of research and lecturing experience.
  • Successful track record of postgraduate supervision at Masters level or higher.
  • Evidence of national/international academic standing as an emerging or established researcher.
  • Substantial, sustained, and recent research output.
  • Proven record of engagement with the scholarship of teaching, e.g. an abridged teaching evaluation or portfolio.
  • Sound communication skills in English.
 
For Lecturer:
  • MSc in Pure or Applied Mathematics.
  • 4 years of research and lecturing experience.
  • Successful track record of postgraduate supervision at Masters level or higher.
  • Evidence of national/international academic standing as an emerging or established researcher.
  • Substantial, sustained, and recent research output.
  • Proven record of engagement with the scholarship of teaching, e.g. an abridged teaching evaluation or portfolio.

Recommendations:
 
  • Research specialization that articulates well with the existing research interests of the department
  • Experience in managing other academics, tutors, and student assistants
  • NRF rating
  • A good/successful research fundraising track record
